Iowa had its moment.

If last season will always be remembered for the win over Michigan, this season will be about the 55-24 win over Ohio State that might have screwed up the College Football Playoff – or, at least, the Big Ten’s place in it.

And then reality dropped like a hammer in the form of the Wisconsin defense that destroyed the Hawkeye offense in a 38-14 loss – the Iowa O didn’t score.

It’s bowl eligible, and now it’s just about jockeying for position. For Purdue, it’s about winning this to be in a position to go bowling with a win over Indiana.

The Boilermakers have already had a solid first season under Jeff Brohm. They beat an Ohio team that might win the MAC, they beat Missouri, and they won two Big Ten games. Now it’s about getting the gravy.

One Reason Why Iowa Will Win

Purdue’s running game went bye-bye last week against Northwestern, and the passing game doesn’t do anything deep.

Okay for most of the year, the Boilermakers were shut down to just 40 yards on the ground against the Wildcats, and Elijah Singular wasn’t able to push the ball down the field well enough.

He threw 60 passes for 376 yards, but they didn’t start rolling until late. The Iowa run defense is okay – it didn’t get gouged by Wisconsin – and it should be able to hold up.

Leading the Big Ten in picks – Josh Jackson has five in the last two games, with two against Wisconsin – Iowa should stop the Purdue O that struggles to convert on third downs.

One Reason Why Purdue Will Win

The Boilermakers don’t have Wisconsin’s defense, but the Iowa offense that showed up in Camp Randall last week is more like the real thing than the one that ripped apart Ohio State.

66 yards. That’s what the Hawkeyes came up with last week with nothing happening through the air. Again, that’s more on the UW D, but the Purdue D is just good enough to keep the Hawkeyes from blowing up, especially on the ground.

Purdue might not have a brick wall of a D, but it’s able to keep games from getting out of hand – only Lamar Jackson and Louisville were able to put up more than 28 points.

Get control, keep the Hawkeye offense from letting Akrum Wadley and the ground game go off, and keep it close. And then hope things work late.

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue has a way of hanging around, but without being able to get over the hump. Iowa will be balanced enough to be fine, and the defense will take care of business, but it’ll take a full four quarters to get this over with.
