Even after a four game losing streak, Indiana still has a solid shot at going bowling with Illinois, Rutgers and Purdue to close things out.
The defense has gone bye-bye, and the offense is wildly inconsistent, but the Hoosiers have just enough to get by a struggling Illinois team.
But IU is still looking for its first Big Ten win, just like the Illini.
It continues to be a true building process for Lovie Smith’s program that continues to start several true freshmen in key spots. There’s no O, but the defense has been able to keep games manageable.
One Reason Why Illinois Will Win
The Indiana running game has come to a dead stop.
That’s to be expected against Wisconsin, but the Hoosiers couldn’t run a lick against Maryland, either.
Michigan and Michigan State are rock-solid up front, too, so there’s at least a built-in excuse, but over the last month, IU has yet to crack the 100-yard mark on the ground and hasn’t been able to get over three yards per carry.
The Hoosiers have receiving weapons, but bad things happen when the passing game – no matter who’s at quarterback – is under duress. Richard Lagow threw two key picks last week against the Badgers, turning a tight game into a blowout.
However, if you think the Hoosier running game is bad …
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
Illinois just can’t seem to find anything that works.
The insertion of Cam Thomas was supposed to get things going a little bit, but his mobility was only good for 30 yards against Illinois. He threw better than he did against Wisconsin, but he didn’t take any chances.
Hurt, young, and with the line unable to block anyone consistently, the offense isn’t able to move or go on any consistent scoring drives.
It might not have seemed like it over the last few weeks, but Indiana’s linebacking corps and defensive front are occasionally terrific.
What’s Going To Happen
Finally, Indiana will get a win.
Illinois will get a decent enough game out of the defense to keep the Hoosiers from every getting comfortable, but three Illini turnovers will be momentum killers.
It won’t be anything special, but at this point, Indiana won’t complain about slugging out a win. The receivers and linebackers will be just enough to get through.
