What’s Going To Happen
Memphis has to lose to SMU and East Carolina and Houston has to beat Tulane this week and Navy next week to take the West and go to the American Athletic Conference championship.
With a great win over USF on the road, the Cougars were able to get past a rough two-game losing streak to get bowl eligible. Now it’s jockeying for a better post-season game, while hoping beyond reasonable hope to play for the ACC title.
Tulane’s option running attack was good enough to get past East Carolina, and now it has to be strong enough to beat Houston and SMU to go bowling.
The Green Wave lost four straight games before finally pulling up out of the nosedive, and now it needs the offense to be more effective and take control of the game from the start.
Tulane is terrific at holding on too the ball and dominating the time of possession, but there needs to be more scoring pop. It doesn’t have enough of a passing game to give the bad Houston secondary problems.
Ed Oliver and the Cougar defensive front don’t get into the backfield quite as much as they should, but the run defense is among the best in the conference. They were able to keep USF to just 137 yards and 2.5 yards per carry, and they’ll be able to step up and stuff the Green Wave ground game time and again.
The Tulane passing game won’t have any answers.
