Now it’s not just Georgia vs. South Carolina, it’s No. 1 Georgia vs. South Carolina.
Obviously, it doesn’t really matter all that much that the Bulldogs are in the top spot of the first round of College Football Playoff rankings, but it’s nice. It showed that the committee realizes just how strong the body of work is, and it really is terrific.
But that also means the Dawgs have a bigger target on their backs than normal.
South Carolina has two SEC losses, but it can jump right back into the title chase with a win.
Beat Georgia, hope Auburn beats the Dawgs, win out, and then roll the dice.
But for now, simply being 6-2 and bowl eligible with wins over NC State, Arkansas and Tennessee makes this a solid second season under Will Muschamp.
Come up with a win this week, though, and with Florida, Wofford and Clemson to close out – all at home – the Gamecocks could be college football’s most interesting team with a win.
Or, Georgia could flex its muscle and show why it’s the No. 1 team.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
It’s done with smoke and mirrors, and it’s never the same game twice, but South Carolina manages to find ways to get the job done depending on the opponent.
Against Vanderbilt, it won with the ground game. Against Tennessee, it was the defense with a goal line stand. Against Arkansas, the D scored three times, and against Louisiana Tech, it was a late rally and a walk-off field goal.
USC doesn’t do any one thing well, but it doesn’t get flagged, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it plays solid special teams.
It does just about everything right to put the pressure on the Bulldogs, who are now supposed to not just win, but win impressively.
One Reason Why Georgia Will Win
Get up early, and that’s it.
South Carolina doesn’t have a rushing offense, it doesn’t have an explosive attack, and to win, it has to keep the score low, control the clock, and muck it up.
But the Bulldogs are explosive, the passing game is efficient, and the offense doesn’t screw up when it’s in the red zone. With this defense, if the Dawgs can get out to a 14-0 lead, that might be it.
There won’t be any reasons to take any chances. Keep the chains moving with the No. 1 team in the SEC in third down plays, a defense good enough to allow just 252 yards per game, and a team overall that’s playing with enough confidence to not worry about the No. 1 designation, and the Gamecocks don’t have it.
What’s Going To Happen
South Carolina isn’t all that bad. It’ll find ways to slow the game down and bring Georgia down to its level – this coaching staff is brilliant at that – but all the Dawgs need is a little burst and they’ll have it.
They’ll take a lead in the first half, and then let the defense take over. It won’t be anything amazing, but there won’t be a whole lot of drama in the fourth quarter.
