It’s the first game of the rest of Georgia’s life.
Lost in all of the weeping and gnashing of teeth over Georgia’s 40-17 loss to Auburn is that it doesn’t really matter.
Yes, it takes out the idea that the Bulldogs can get to the College Football Playoff with a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship, and now there’s no room for an off day against Georgia Tech or UK, but whatever.
Win the next three games, get into the tournament.
Kentucky, though, isn’t going to be a pushover. Now it gets to take on the mindset of turning a good season into a special one. The Wildcats are already set to go bowling, but ruining Georgia’s dream this week and taking down rival Louisville next week would be amazing.
UK is playing with house money, and Georgia needs to be ready to get it all going again.
One Reason Why Georgia Will Win
This is still the team that beat Notre Dame, ripped through Mississippi State, and rolled through South Carolina on the way to the No. 1 spot in the CFP.
The defense is still amazing. The running game is still loaded with NFL talent. The dream of winning the national title is still there.
No team has yet to win a College Football Playoff national title without a loss on the resume, but now the Bulldogs have to go back to what worked.
The running game couldn’t do much of anything against Auburn, but before that it was good for at least 200 yards per game without much of a problem.
Watch out for the O line to crank up the production again with a make-up performance for last week. Watch out for Nick Chubb and Sony Michel to run with a sense of purpose, and watch out for Georgia to look the part against a team that looks good statistically, but doesn’t quite have the firepower to keep up if it gets down early. However …
One Reason Why Kentucky Will Win
The Kentucky defensive front should be able to win its share of battles.
Granted, the production against the run has come mostly against teams that can’t move the ball a lick, but the Cats are only allowing 3.8 yards per carry thanks to a good, aggressive line that can get into the backfield.
UK doesn’t turn the ball over all that much, it’s okay on penalties, and it seemingly capitalizes on every opportunity. There might not be the talent Georgia has, and there are issues when to stopping efficient passing games, but the team doesn’t beat itself.
It does a lot of the little things right. All of the pressure is on the other side of the field – UK can play fast and loose.
What’s Going To Happen
Georgia might not come out and stomp all over a solid Kentucky team that can keep this close and interesting, but it’ll pull away as the game goes on.
Jake Fromm won’t make any big mistakes, the running game will be solid, and Georgia fans will be able to relax again for about ten minutes – and then the fear of Georgia Tech’s option offense will kick in.
