Is it possible Georgia Tech can screw it all up?
Georgia is two wins away from getting into the College Football Playoff, and there’s a chance it can lose this and still get in by winning the SEC Championship next week.
But that’s a risk, especially if Clemson beats an unbeaten Miami in a close battle in the ACC Championship.
After all, both the Tigers and the Canes took care of business against the Yellow Jackets – and Clemson beat the same Auburn team that hammered Georgia.
But for Georgia Tech, this is to keep the season alive.
It really, really stinks that UCF didn’t play Georgia Tech after the hurricane nightmare – even though the Yellow Jackets were willing to do just about anything to play it. And now at 5-5, lose, and that’s it.
After losing to a mediocre Duke team last week, and with two one-point losses along the way, this would be a bitter end.
One Reason Why Georgia Will Win
Notre Dame doesn’t run the option, but its brand of zone-read mixed with line-up-and-blast ground attack was held by Georgia to just 55 yards.
Auburn was able to run for 237 yards and average over five yards per carry, but that’s not the main reason the Bulldogs lost – the Tiger D had a lot to do with that.
That was the only time anyone ran for over 200 yards on the Bulldogs, and just four other teams came up with more than 65.
On the other side, Georgia Tech doesn’t do much of anything to get into the backfield – ranking last in the ACC in tackles for loss – and it’s about to deal with a ground game that hit everyone for 200 yards or more against everyone but Notre Dame and Auburn.
Georgia Tech just gave up 319 rushing yards to Duke.
One Reason Why Georgia Tech Will Win
As always, if you can’t deal with the option attack on the right day, you can’t deal with Georgia Tech.
It’s not dominating like it did over the first month of the season, but it’s still strong enough and efficient enough to crank out at least 200 yards just by its very nature.
Of course, having to fight for a bowl game is a big deal, but all of the pressure is on the other side of the field. All it will take is a little early success, a few big deep passes, and enough third down conversions to control the time of possession to make Georgia panic.
Able to win two of the last three years, Georgia Tech will hardly be intimidated.
What’s Going To Happen
Georgia will take care of this from the start.
The linebackers are too good, too smart, and too disciplined – they’ll be in the right place at the right time most of the time.
Georgia Tech’s offense will have its moments, but the defense will wear down as the game goes on.
The Yellow Jackets are dead last in the nation in allowing red zone points – giving up scores 32-of-33 times inside the 20. Georgia will score every time it gets a shot at the end of a good drive.
