The nightmare might just be a game away from mercifully being over.
Florida forgivably lost tight battles at home to LSU and Texas A&M, and even more forgivably got blasted by the No. 1 team in the country playing at a whole other level. And then came the coaching change after Georgia, and then …
45-16 to Missouri. And that’s not forgivable for the two-time defending SEC East champion.
Even after all of the issues, the Gators can still go bowling by winning out against South Carolina, UAB and Florida State.
But ex-Gator head man Will Muschamp can take care of that with one good game from his team.
The Gamecocks might be coming off a good loss to Georgia – they were at least competitive – and now it’s about jockeying for bowl positioning.
Win this, get by Wofford, and then it’s time to have some real fun with Clemson coming to Columbia.
One Reason Why Florida Will Win
South Carolina doesn’t have the type of offense that can run away and hide with the game like Missouri did.
Mizzou isn’t all that great, but it has enough of an offense to have kept on rolling once it got a lead on the Gators. The Gamecocks don’t.
USC plays right into Florida’s needs. This has to be a low-scoring slugfest that stays in the high-teens. Considering the Gamecocks almost never own the clock – they’re miserable defensively on third downs and stink when it comes to time of possession – Florida needs to grind, take advantage of all of its opportunities, and dominate the tempo.
Forgetting about what happened against the Tigers, and two weeks ago against Georgia, the Gators can do that.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
As if Florida wasn’t enough of a mess before, getting hammered by Missouri by 29 points makes the situation even uglier.
The biggest issue? The Gators can’t decide on a quarterback.
The idea of Malik Zaire might seem like an interesting idea – he got yanked against Missouri despite hitting 13-of-19 passes for 158 yards with a pick, and running for 17 yards – but that doesn’t do anything for the future of Florida football.
There’s still no steady running game, and the downfield passing game is non-existent without any of the receiving playmakers the team hoped to have before the season started, and there’s the malaise factor – the team is playing like it’s running through mud.
Two giveaways to this Gamecock team should end it.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s not going to be anything to exciting, and it’ll be extremely workmanlike, but South Carolina will take it. The Gators just don’t have the offensive pop.
The score will be kept low, and Florida will have several chances to take over, but it’ll settle for field goals instead of touchdowns.
USC will get a few touchdowns.
