It’s the first day of the rest of Florida’s life.
After the Jim McElwain era ended with a whimper, now the Gators are playing out the string until the program figures out who’s the next coach up. They can still go bowling, but after three straight losses, they need to win three of their last four games.
This has to be one of those wins.
It might all be a mirage, but Missouri has found its offense again with 120 points over the last two weeks. Granted, those were in wins over Idaho and UConn, but at least the team showed it could crank it up a bit.
There’s still hope to go bowling needing to take down three of their last four games, but with Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Arkansas to close, that’s not crazy.
One Reason Why Florida Will Win
Will the Randy Shannon, new coach energy kick in?
Playing against a jacked up team like Georgia didn’t help the optics, but the Gators were in a weird place under McElwain. The offense can’t be any worse, and if the defense can rise up and rock like it did before Jacksonville, it should have some success against a Mizzou offense that’s not nearly as good as it’s been over the last few weeks.
All the O has to do is grind it out – Missouri is dead last in the nation in time of possession. Gators, with Malik Zaire starting now at quarterback – run, rumble on the SEC’s worst D in third down conversion possession, and let the defense rise up and control the game.
And play hard for Shannon.
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
Get the offense hot early, and Florida won’t be able to keep up the pace.
Drew Lock has been amazing over the last month, and that includes hitting Georgia with four touchdown passes and following it up with Idaho and UConn for 11 total scores.
The Mizzou offense isn’t just putting up big passing numbers; it’s hitting on huge plays with Lock averaging well over 11 yards per pass over the last three games.
Last in the SEC in first downs, and among the worst teams in the country in total offense, Florida’s O just doesn’t work. Score two early touchdowns, Mizzou, and you might be fine.
What’s Going To Happen
Florida will start to play a whole lot better.
The defense will come up with a gem, and the ground game will pound and pound and pound away on a Tiger run defense that should give up well over 200 yards.
Lock will throw two key picks as too many Tiger drives end in frustration, the Gator D will stiffen when needed, and Florida’s season will suddenly take on a new look.
