Does Florida State have anything left in the tank? Last week against Boston College was supposed to be the gut-check pride moment in a lost year, and the Seminoles didn’t show up in a brutal 35-3 loss.
And now it has to face a rested Syracuse squad.
The Noles still have a shot to make a season out of this by winning out and ruining Clemson’s year, but one loss, and that’s it – no bowl.
Syracuse has had two weeks off after the painful loss to Miami, and now, as crazy as this sounds, it might need to win this since it could be the easiest game left on the schedule.
With Wake Forest, at Louisville and Boston College remaining, the Orange need to win two more games to go bowling. They have to get one of those victories this week.
One Reason Why Florida State Will Win
So what are the Seminoles doing right? The secondary is still among the most talented in the country and the pass defense is still strong. Against a Syracuse team that has to throw well to win, there might be a problem cranking up the offense for long stretches.
Boston College won by pounding away – and with a defense that was able to stop a dead FSU O. Syracuse doesn’t have the same D.
Just like the BC game, this comes down to want-to for FSU. The talent is still undeniable, but it has to rise up and rock on the defensive front. The Seminole defense hasn’t been all that awful, but …
One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
The Florida State offense continues to be a total nightmare thanks to an offensive line that can’t block anyone.
The Noles are dead last in the ACC in giving up tackles for loss, and even though James Blackman hasn’t been miserable, they’re last in total offense, too, because no one is getting time to work.
With youth in the backfield and no blocking to help, the turnovers are flowing. Even worse, the great defense isn’t taking the ball away with just five takeaways on the season.
As long as the Orange come in sharp offensively and don’t give the ball away, the mistakes will come from the other side. Score early, and forget it – the secondary is good enough to give Blackman a tough time.
What’s Going To Happen
The misery will continue.
FSU will come out hot with a good scoring drive and the right attitude, and then drives will bog down. The offense will get the ground game going a bit, but it’ll be Eric Dungey’s game, coming up with a strong, veteran performance with a few big downfield plays to open it up.
And then the snowball will start rolling. As soon as there’s any negative momentum, FSU will start to buckle and the Orange O will go on a run.
