With one shocking 43-20 win over Georgia Tech, Duke thrust itself back into the bowl world needing just a win over Wake Forest to save its season.
Wildly inconsistent, the Blue Devil offense hit the skis after a brilliant first month, losing six straight in an ugly stretch. But beat the Demon Deacons, and none of that matters.
But Wake Forest is really, really good.
QB John Wolford and company have rolled to a run of three wins in the last four games with an unstoppable offense that pops 30 points on the board like that they were M&M’s.
The real deal, they might have lost to the same Georgia Tech team Duke beat, but they also got by Louisville and NC State. Beat Duke, and it’s an eight-win regular season and a wild success.
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
The Daniel Jones who showed up against Georgia Tech has to make the trip to Wake Forest.
Fantastic at times, his up-and-down season has been part of Duke’s issue.
He went a stretch without throwing a touchdown pass in three games in four, and with interceptions and misfires a big problem. But against the Yellow Jackets, he hit 69% of his passes for 177 yards and two scores with no interceptions, and with 91 rushing yards and a TD.
This week, he has to keep up. The Blue Devils might have to come up with 40 points or so, and they have to be ready for a firefight against …
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
Wolford. He continues to be incredible.
With 23 touchdown passes and just four picks on the season, he’s not making big mistakes, he’s able to keep things going with his legs when needed, and he’s been deadly accurate.
Jones is having a consistency issue, but Wolford isn’t, hitting 65% of his passes with 200 yards or more in each of the last six games he’s played in.
Because of him, Wake Forest has the most efficient passing game in the ACC. Duke is 115th in the nation in passing efficiency.
What’s Going To Happen
Duke will keep it going. It’s not going to be able to get by the Demon Deacons once the points and yards start flying, but they’ll make it interesting.
How’d the Blue Devils beat Georgia Tech? They ran for 319 yards. They’ll hit Wake Forest for two bills, but that won’t be enough.
