Venue: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC
There’s a whole lot of fun to be had throughout Rivalry Saturday, but this one could turn into one of the more intense battles.
South Carolina is in a nice spot for a game like this. It doesn’t have to fight for a bowl game, it’s had a nice season winning five of its last six games, and there’s hope for the future considering Will Muschamp is just getting started with the recruiting game.
And now it gets a shot to screw up its rival at home.
Clemson doesn’t have any room to screw up.
There might be a case that a two-loss Tiger team might deserve to get in over Auburn – if the SEC Tigers win the SEC Championship – considering the head-to-head aspect, but nah.
The loss to Syracuse is awful now – the Orange aren’t going bowling – and there will likely be too many other options for the College Football Playoff. Lose this week, and even with an ACC title, it’ll be a fight to get in.
Clemson won in a blowout last year, but South Carolina gave the Tigers fits two years ago in a 37-32 Gamecock loss. The time before that in Columbia? A 31-17 USC win.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
South Carolina just doesn’t have the offense, and it really doesn’t have the ground game to get things going if the Tigers get up early.
Jake Bentley has been solid, and the defense has been able to keep the team in games, but really, this winning streak just isn’t all that great.
What are we talking about here? Arkansas? Tennessee? Vanderbilt? Florida? Wofford? None of them are going bowling, and it was a struggle to get by all of them.
What’s been Clemson’s best quarter? The first, scoring 108 points doing a strong job of getting off to big starts.
What’s been South Carolina’s worst offensive quarter? The first, scoring just 51 points so far.
Put up a quick 10-0 lead, make South Carolina have to battle back, and the Tiger D should be able to do the rest.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
Grind, grind, grind, and make Clemson throw it deep.
Don’t be fooled by Kelly Bryant’s performance against Citadel last week. The Tigers threw for 479 yards as a team with five touchdowns, averaging close to 12 yards per try. Overall, though, this has been a pitch-and-putt passing game without the explosion of last year.
Bryant is good enough to keep the chains moving and hit the midrange throws to keep the offense rolling, but South Carolina is going to load up to stop the run and hope for the best.
Clemson’s two worst running games this year were against Auburn – 96 yards in a close call – and with 113 against Syracuse. South Carolina has held six teams this year to 120 yards or fewer – it HAS to dominate up front.
What’s Going To Happen
All the pressure is on Clemson, and it’s going to play like it.
South Carolina will play charged up – just like everyone does in rivalry games – and the defense will do its part to keep this close. But when it absolutely has to, the Clemson defensive line will take over.
USC will have chance after chance after chance, and it won’t be able to bust through. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers will come up with three big sacks on three big drives to get out alive.
In this case, just survive and advance. And then it’s all about Miami.
