If it wasn’t the best game of last year, it was at least in the team photo with NC State having the eventual national champion dead-to-rights, but couldn’t close in a thrilling 24-17 Clemson win.
This year, it’s time to prove that the Wolfpack can get the job done and take over the ACC Atlantic.
Of course, State winning would be the ACC’s big nightmare – it needs a one-loss Clemson vs. Virginia Tech or Miami with one loss in the ACC Championship to get a team into the College Football Playoff – but it’s got the defense to do it and the veteran offense to win this time around, even if neither side of the ball showed it against Notre Dame.
Clemson got the love from the CFP in the first rankings with a No. 4 spot, and beating NC State would only help the fantastic resume that much more, and would further blow off the Syracuse loss.
It’s this simple. If Clemson wins out, it’s going to be in the College Football Playoff. One more loss, and that’s it. For NC State, win out, and it’s in the Orange Bowl.
But before that, if the game turns out to be almost as good as last year’s classic – great.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
Everyone focused on Josh Adams and the Notre Dame offense ripping up the great NC State defensive front, but it was the other side of the ball that turned the game into a blowout.
The Irish didn’t do anything funky, and it didn’t do a whole bunch to get behind the line, but the NC State running game went nowhere, and QB Ryan Finley had a rough day completing just 17-of-37 passes.
And now the Wolfpack O line has to deal with the Clemson defensive line.
As good as NC State has been, it hasn’t been amazing up front. It’s done a good job of keeping Finley from getting hit, but it’s not generating enough of a push for the running game, especially with Nyheim Hines hurting.
And now is has to deal with the Clemson defense that leads the nation in sacks and lives behind the line.
As long as Kelly Bryant – who was more than just solid last week in the win over Georgia Tech – doesn’t start turning the ball over, and as long as the Tiger offense is able to get into a front-running role, the defense will take care of the rest.
One Reason Why NC State Will Win
You don’t think the Wolfpack defensive front is a wee bit embarrassed by what happened in South Bend?
This is a very talented, very prideful D with the talent to be far, far better than it showed in the ugly loss.
The Clemson offensive line is terrific, and it’s great when it gets into a lather for the running game, but it’ll give up sacks.
Bryant might have looked back to normal against Georgia Tech, but he’s still just a few weeks removed from all the problems that got him knocked out of the Syracuse game.
The defense has to rise up and take over right away. Finley and the offense are fine, and they’ll keep pushing the ball down the field – the Clemson secondary can get hit for big plays – but Bradley Chubb and company, this one’s on you.
What’s Going To Happen
At home in a cranked up environment, NC State will come out rolling, especially on defense as it controls the first part of the game.
But Clemson is used to taking everyone’s big shot, it’s used to crazy road games, and it’s used to feeding off the moment – especially on defense.
NC State will get up early, but it won’t be able to deliver the knockout blow – settling for field goals will be devastating. Clemson will keep hanging around, hanging around, hanging around – and then it’ll take over early in the fourth as Bryant overcomes a shaky game with two strong scoring drives.
The D line will take care of the rest.
