Florida State beat Syracuse 27-24, Syracuse beat Clemson 27-24. There. That settles that – of course that means FSU is better than Clemson.
It’s so, so disappointing that this game is just another thing on a college football Saturday, because this was supposed to be it.
This was supposed to be a College Football Playoff-level game between two of the last four national champions. This was supposed to be a titanic battle loaded with a bunch of guys destined to make a lot of money on Sundays.
It’s not, but it should still be terrific.
FSU is feeling it again after the Syracuse win, blowing off the idea that it needs that newly-rescheduled game against ULM to get bowl eligible. It wasn’t to take down Clemson and ruin its season, beat Delaware State, and then win at Florida to close strong.
Clemson wants to win another national title.
This hasn’t quite been the dominant force of the the last two years, but the Tigers have managed to be put in a nice position to get back into the fun by winning out.
Take down FSU, beat Citadel, survive South Carolina, and then beat Miami for the ACC title. Do that, and the Tigers are in the final four for the third straight season.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
Florida State offensive line, meet Clemson’s defensive front.
Oh sure, the FSU front five did a nice job blowing open holes for the ground game last week in the win over the Orange, but the Syracuse defensive front also had a little part in the Seminole backfield on a regular basis.
The Clemson D line continues to be the absolute and finite truth, leading the nation in sacks – even with just one last week against NC State – and doing a solid job against the run.
Yeah, it might have been a battle for the Tiger defense against a talented and motivated NC State offense at home last week, but it came away with the win.
One Reason Why Florida State Will Win
Is Cam Akers really ready to keep this going?
It’s not the fault of the star freshman running back that he hasn’t been a bigger national story so far. He hasn’t been able to get rolling behind the leaky FSU O line, but last week he did a nice job against Syracuse, tearing off 199 yards and two scores.
Overall, the Clemson defense did a nice job against the NC State running game, but Akers has to be established right away, James Blackman has to be error-free like he was against the Orange, and the offense has to keep things moving.
The defense is still solid – third in the nation against the run and great on third downs. Now the offensive stars are starting to emerge.
What’s Going To Happen
FSU will be feisty enough to keep this close, but the offense won’t be able to come through when it has to against the Clemson defensive line.
The FSU offensive front has been better, but it’s still a concern when dealing with an elite level line. Clemson will dial up the pressure from the start in good, solid win, but not a totally dominant one offensively.
This will be about the Tiger D.
