Florida Atlantic (9-3) vs. North Texas (9-3) Game Preview
Broadcast, TV, Game Time
Date: Saturday, December 2nd
Game Time: 12:00 pm ET
Venue: FAU Football Stadium, Boca Raton, FL
This might not be the most scintillating of matchups – considering Florida Atlantic won 69-31 in the first meeting in the middle of the season – but at least that will be a whole lot of points.
Can it match the 58-44 WKU win over Louisiana Tech last year? Maybe not in total score, but it should be a fun and wild shootout with both sides bombing away for nether more than conference pride.
But both programs should care – and why not?
North Texas was a total doormat for years, but it found its way into a bowl game last year thanks to its APR score, and now it’a a nine-win team with a fun offense and a team in the hunt for a double-digit win campaign.
The Mean Green aren’t just bum-slayers – there are five wins over teams going bowling. Avenge that early loss to FAU, and this will truly be a special season.
But it can’t magic the fun FAU is having in Lane Kiffin’s first season.
He did it. This was always going to be a rental job, and he couldn’t do more to troll Tennessee – he so wants that gig again – but really? 9-3 with an eight-game winning streak after the 1-3 start? A blowout win over FIU? Eight double-digit wins over the nine-game stretch?
Owl fans will take it, even if Kiffin is out of here as soon as some big gig wants him.
It’s offensive firepower time on a Saturday morning. Have fun.
One Reason Why Florida Atlantic Will Win
The North Texas defense doesn’t force enough mistakes.
The Mean Green might have a whole lot of weapons to make this wild, but they don’t have a defense that 1) comes up with third down stops, 2) can stop the pass with any regularity or 3) comes up with takeaways.
UNT forced three takeaways in the win over Old Dominion. Other than that, the defense has come up with just three turnovers in seven of the last eight games, and no more than one in any other game during the stretch.
The D needs to force FAU to screw up to win this, because the Owls should be able to control things early on.
The ground game has been devastating, led by 1,632-yard rusher Devin Singletary. He ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in the first meeting, and now he’s on a run of ten straight 100-yard rushing games.
The UNT run D that gives up more than 200 yards per game doesn’t have the talent to stop him, however …
One Reason Why North Texas Will Win
This is a fast Florida Atlantic offense that doesn’t care a lick about time of possession. It’ll strike in a hurry, but still, the more North Texas can offense can control the clock and the tempo, the better.
North Texas is brilliant on third down conversions with an offense that’s second in the league behind FAU.
Star RB Jeffery Wilson might be done for the season after getting hurt, but the running game wasn’t going to win this anyway. This is all about whether or not Mason Fine can outbomb the FAU offense.
He’s been good for well over 200 yards per game, but he has to keep hitting his third down throws, he has to keep a good tempo to the attack, and he has to avoid the big interceptions. He threw two against FAU, along with 283 yards and two touchdowns.
Get hot, stay hot, put the pressure on FAU. The Owls are supposed to win this at home – North Texas can play fast and loose. It’s all gravy, and it’s about to play like it.
What’s Going To Happen
North Texas has the offense to keep up the pace for a while, but at home, and with an offense that’s doing everything right, this is the Florida Atlantic coronation.
The Mean Green stink when it comes to turnover margin, FAU leads Conference USA in fewest turnovers and takeaways, it converts off of everything, and it’s able to turn the lights out fast with the way the offense plays.
FAU will win, and Kiffin will come up with some sort of fun and funky tweet that’ll be a must-see.
