The positions are set. Boston College is going bowling, Syracuse isn’t, and this game doesn’t make all that much of a difference for either one in the overall betterment of the world.

However, if you’re Clemson, you’d sort of like Syracuse to win this.

Not that there’s a massive difference between losing to a 5-7 team rather than a 4-8 one, but … there’s a difference between losing to a 5-7 team rather than a 4-8 one.

BC and Syracuse won’t care about that.

The Eagles have been one of the biggest surprises of the season, with the offense blowing up over the second half on the way to winning four of their last four games.

Syracuse has lost four straight with the offense fizzling at the wrong time, especially last week in a 56-10 loss to Louisville. This is the Orange’s bowl game, and for head coach Dino Babers – who hasn’t won since the Clemson game – it would be a good way to go into the offseason.

One Reason Why Boston College Will Win

Syracuse generates no defensive pressure whatsoever, and it doesn’t do nearly enough to win the turnover margin. That’s a problem against a Boston College offense that’s on fire.

Scoring 35 points or more in four of the last five games – and winning all four of them – the ground game has been unstoppable, tearing off 200 yards or more in the last five games and over 300 yards in wins over Louisville and Connecticut.

BC is 5-1 when it runs for 200 yards or more. Syracuse just gave up 411 yards on the ground to Louisville, and allowed 200 yards or more in each of the last three games. The Orange won’t generate the heat in the backfield to stop A.J. Dillon and the Eagle runners.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

The Syracuse run defense is bad, but the BC run D is worse.

To be fair, the numbers are a bit skewed, with Notre Dame and Clemson doing most of the heavy lifting for the stats earlier in the season, but the BC defense is still giving up five yards per carry.

With QB Eric Dungey likely out again, Syracuse has to try controlling the game on the ground. It’s been okay, but will it be enough? The Orange aren’t equipped to keep up without Dungey if this gets into a shootout.

At home, Syracuse has to get out to a good start, and control the clock from there – if it can.

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse will play well for a while at home, but Boston College is too hot right now on both sides of the ball. Syracuse will wing it around with Zach Mahoney giving it a shot, but he’ll throw a few picks, BC will convert, and it’ll get out with a seventh win to keep the great season going.
