It’s been a rough year and a rough time for Arkansas, but there are still two more games for head coach Bret Bielema to come up with something amazing.
And it still might not matter.
With Athletic Director Jeff Long being knocked out, Arkansas athletics will undergo an overhaul over the next several weeks. Bielema going 4-6 so far hasn’t made life easy, and now, even if he comes up with home wins over Mississippi State and Missouri, there might still be a change.
Mississippi State currently holds the honor of being the SEC’s fourth-best team – losing to Alabama, Georgia and Auburn, but beating LSU.
But now it’s time to close strong and jockey for a strong bowl bid.
At 7-3, the Bulldogs are in the mix for a ten-win season with wins over the Hogs, Ole Miss, and then a bowl game, but like Arkansas, the program might be dealing with a coaching change soon of Dan Mullen gets an offer he can’t refuse.
But for now, just closing out strong would keep adding on to an already terrific year.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
What’s Arkansas’ big issue? It can’t stop anyone on third downs.
It’s been a season-long problem, and it isn’t getting any better for a Hog D that’s allowed offenses to convert 50% or more of their chances in three of the last four games. Considering Arkansas needs to control the ball and control the clock, not being able to get the defense off the field isn’t a plus.
There’s absolutely no pass rush, there aren’t any big plays happening behind the line, and it’s all leading to the worst scoring D in the league.
Mississippi State might not be air-tight in all phases, but it’s great at keeping the chains moving. The cowbell O is second behind Georgia in the SEC when it comes to third down conversions.
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
For all of the problems, Arkansas is able to still run the ball a little bit. It’s not nearly as effective as it needs to be, but it’s still hitting the 200-yard mark against most of the mediocre defensive fronts.
The Bulldogs D line has been good, but it got hit hard by the stars. Alabama, Auburn and Georgia were able to crank out over 200 yards, but that’s been it.
Arkansas has to at least give it a shot.
With QB Austin Allen back after missing time hurt, he was okay against LSU, David Williams and Devwah Whaley were able to come up with a few decent runs, and there’s just enough in place to keep pushing up front.
The Hogs are okay at grinding games down – they almost always own the time of possession – but they really, really have to dominate the clock to pull this off.
Mississippi State is coming off the Alabama game. Teams tend to struggle to bounce back in a hurry after getting up for the big dog.
What’s Going To Happen
A year after running for 131 yards and four scores in a loss, this time around, Nick Fitzgerald will do more of the same, but in a Mississippi State win.
The Arkansas defense just can’t come up with enough stops, and the offense isn’t explosive enough to keep up after the Bulldogs take an early lead.
