It was a setback, but Arizona still looked solid in the 49-35 loss at USC. As Pac-12 losses go, this one was relatively acceptable.

The team showed a fight in a wild shootout.

Already bowl eligible, the Cats are playing with house money at this point. And now it’s time to build towards the future, with a chance to roll through the final three games with Oregon and the showdown at Arizona State to close.

Oregon State is looking for anything positive.

The close loss to Stanford might have to do in a lost season without any FBS wins so far. It also gets Arizona State and Oregon in the final two games, but first, the run D has to survive Khalil Tate and the onslaught of the Wildcat ground game.

One Reason Why Arizona Will Win

The Beaver defensive front hasn’t been totally miserable, and it’s not the team’s biggest problem, but it allowed 200 yards or more in three of the last five games.

The biggest problem? Third down defense.

Everyone is getting fat on the Beaver defense that can’t get off the field. The Stanford game was an aberration, with the Cardinal O converting just 31% of its third down chances. Every other FBS team on the slate has converted 50% or more.

Tate and the running game will set up easy third down chances – when it’s not hitting home runs – and it’ll keep on converting.

One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers have a few decent linebackers who might be able to keep Tate and the Cats from going off – at least that’s the hope for the Beavers.

Manase Hungalu would be a sure-thing All-Pac-12 star – and he still might be – on a more prominent team, coming up with 81 tackles on the year, coming off a 20-stop day against Cal.

No, the D doesn’t come up with third down stops, but Hungalu and the defensive front can come up with tackles for loss from time to time. this group has to be fantastic to keep the game from getting out of hand.

What’s Going To Happen

At home, it’ll be the Arizona running game on display.

Tate and the offense will get out to a huge first half, and then coast from there with the reserves getting plenty of work in the fourth quarter.

Arizona leads the Pac-12 in total offense. This game won’t change that.
