Can Oregon be Oregon again?
The Ducks still need a win to become bowl eligible, and while they have Oregon State still do take down, getting it done at home against a terrific Arizona team would turn around the ugly late slide – maybe.
The team fell off the map after QB Justin Herbert got hurt, and now they’re ultra-flaky.
After rolling by Utah, they were shut down to a dead stop by Washington in an ugly 38-3 clunker.
But can the offense be great? It hasn’t been over the last month other than that Utah game. It’ll have to be against a fun Arizona team that will do its part.
The Wildcats overcame the loss to USC with a blowout win over Oregon State. Now it’s about jockeying for bowl position with Oregon and ASU to close things out and both on the road.
One Reason Why Arizona Will Win
The Oregon offense has gone bye-bye.
The attack that dominated over the first have of the season has only scored more than 14 points once in the last five games – it couldn’t even produce against the miserable UCLA defense.
So what’s the problem? There’s NO passing attack.
After cranking up 250 yards or more in each of the first four games, it hit the skids – again, after Herbert got hurt – and hasn’t been able to come up with more than 74 yards since.
That’s four straight games without being able to throw for 100 yards.
One of the most penalized teams in the country, and with problems losing the ball, there are a whole lot of big things the Ducks do wrong that aren’t helping the cause. however …
One Reason Why Oregon Will Win
Is Herbert coming back? At the very least, Arizona has to prepare for his return.
The Ducks aren’t announced who’ll start, and there’s a rumor that Herbert is getting close to being back to form. It’ll be asking a lot to get him to crank up the offense to dominant again if he’s back, but at the very least, he might be able to give it a boost.
But if not, and if he can’t go, Oregon needs a huge game from its defensive front.
Among the best in the country at getting behind the line, the pass rush has been fantastic, the tackles for loss are coming in bunches, and the defensive aggressiveness has kept the team in games. Oregon is second in the Pac-12 in both sacks and tackles for loss, however …
What’s Going To Happen
Arizona leads the conference in both categories.
It doesn’t matter who’s at quarterback, the Arizona offense and Khalil Tate are humming along too well. The Duck D should keep the game from getting out of hand, but at the moment, the Wildcats are better equipped for a firefight.
Arizona will give up yards, but they’ll make up for it with big plays from Tate and the unstoppable ground game.
The Cats are 7-0 when running for over 240 yards, 0-3 when under the mark. Oregon has allowed over 240 yards on the ground in two of its last four games.
