It’s not Wisconsin’s fault that its schedule stinks, but it’s doing what a good team is supposed to against mediocrity.
Okay, okay, so it took too much work to put away Northwestern, and it took too long to pull away from Nebraska, but the formula seems to be working out fine.
Get through the first half, wait for it … wait for it … wait for it … and then the offensive line and the running game takes over. When that happens, that’s about it.
But Purdue should be more than just the speed bump it’s been over the last several seasons.
Jeff Brohm has done a wonderful job of making the program relevant again, and now it finally has its good win. Playing Louisville and Michigan tough was nice, but getting past Minnesota was strong.
The D has been outstanding so far, but now it has to deal with a Badger team that’s found its power.
Wisconsin has beaten Purdue 11 straight times. Brohm appears to be good enough to stop things like that.
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
The Purdue linebackers have been fantastic.
WKU transfer T.J. McCollum has been everything the Purdue run defense couldn’t asked for, especially combining with do-it-all playmaker Ja’Whaun Bentley and open-field tackling machine Markus Bailey.
It’s not totally insane to suggest that Purdue might just have the best linebackers in the Big Ten at the moment – or at least be in the top three.
They might have been shoved a bit by Minnesota last week, but they also came up with more than their share of wins, with McCollum making 12 stops, Bentley coming up with a pivotal pick six, and Bailey doing everything in between.
Wisconsin needed a while before the dam broke against Nebraska’s underappreciated defense. It might not be able to make it happen against this group. But …
One Reason Why Wisconsin Will Win
Pressure and time … pressure and time …
The Badgers were struggling on the road against Nebraska. It was a fight that could’ve tipped either way, and then the Wisconsin running game happened.
Freshman Jonathan Taylor is turning into a special back, coming up with a breakthrough performance against Florida Atlantic, running for 223 yards and three scores, and dominating the Huskers last week with 249 yards and two scores, averaging ten yards per pop.
He’s been great, but it’s partly because the O line has been able to find an extra gear.
As good as the Purdue defense is, it doesn’t get behind the line or get to the quarterback enough. That’s a problem against the Badgers.
What’s Going To Happen
Purdue will be annoying.
The defense will have a fantastic 20 minutes, and the offense will capitalize on a few mistakes, and then the Badgers will come up with a score late in the first half.
As the second half rolls on, the Purdue O line won’t keep the Badgers out of the backfield, Taylor and the running game will work, and there won’t be any problems in the fourth quarter.
