At some point, Wisconsin will have to play a good team and will be tested to see just how good it is. Until then, it 1) has to continue to roll through the not-its-fault easy slate, and 2) do a much, much better job of putting teams away.
It was able to run all over Nebraska in the second half, but it allowed Northwestern to hang around way too late, and last week it couldn’t seem to get rid of Purdue after a terrific start.
Maryland is solid, but quarterback injuries have taken their toll, and the defense has struggled over the last few games, but it’s still a plucky enough squad to come up with road wins over Texas and Minnesota.
It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, but taking down the mighty Badgers would be a season-maker no matter what happens next.
One Reason Why Wisconsin Will Win
The Maryland run defense has hit the wall.
Great against Texas, it was able to stuff Minnesota, too, but that’s been about it. UCF, Ohio State and Northwestern – who hasn’t run well against anyone – were all able to crank out big yards in chunks, with those three combining for over 750 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Enter Jonathan Taylor, the Heisman candidate who came 14 yards away from becoming the first freshman to hit 1,000 yards in six games. He tore through Nebraska for 249 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 219 yards and a score against Purdue last week.
Run Taylor, rely on the defense to stop a third string quarterback, and don’t make mistakes at home. The Badgers can do that.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
D.J. Moore might be just good enough to take down the Badger defense by himself.
Nebraska stayed alive early in Lincoln with a few big pass plays and great performances from the top targets, JD Spielman and Stanley Morgan Jr. Moore was held in check by Ohio State, but he came back roaring against Northwestern, catching 12 passes for 210 yards and two scores.
The Badgers secondary is good, but it can be beaten if the pass rush isn’t rolling. However …
What’s Going To Happen
The Maryland offensive line is giving up plays in the backfield in bunches. It’ll be one step forward, eight yards back time and again for the Terp offense as it struggles to answer a few good early Badger scoring drives.
