It’s one of the best vs. the worst. It’s Wisconsin trying to fight through the bad schedule and stay interested, and win big enough to get everyone interested in a good team that still has to prove it’s a great one.
On the flip side if Illinois, who seems to be getting worse with losses to Rutgers and Minnesota as part of a five-game losing streak. It’s a young team that’s building for the next few years, but Lovie Smith needs a win – or at least a good performance against a great team.
2007 was the last time the Illini pulled off a win in the series. Now it just needs to avoid being blown away.
Wisconsin doesn’t have to look good – wins are all that matter.
As long as the Badgers get to the Big Ten championship at 11-1, they’ll have a shot at the College Football Playoff. But until then, if they win, and if Nebraska and Northwestern both lose, the West will race effectively be over.
One Reason Why Wisconsin Will Win
Minnesota was able to run as much as it wanted to on the Illinois defensive front. And now, welcome to Wisconsin and it’s blasting ground attack.
While Alex Honribrook is throwing well, as always, the Badgers want to crank things up on the ground. The Illinois D does next to nothing to get into the backfield, and gets gouged way too easily as the game goes on.
Minnesota got 100-yard running games out of two backs, finishing with close to 300 rushing yards as a team. The Badgers are doing a great job of dropping the hammer in the second halves of games, and they’re owning third downs.
Wisconsin is second in the nation in third down conversions – Illinois can’t stop anyone from moving the chains. Be shocked if Wisconsin doesn’t do what it does best.
One Reason Why Illinois Will Win
As good and as effective as Wisconsin might be, it hasn’t played a full sixty minutes of solid football.
Between Jonathan Taylor’s ill-timed fumbles, and with the inability to put games well out of reach – stalling against Maryland and Purdue, and struggling late against Northwestern – focus has been a problem.
For all of the Illini’s problems, they’re not all that bad at taking the ball away. They’ve forced 14 turnovers on the year, and Wisconsin isn’t adverse to giving it up. For a middling Illinois offense, it needs the help.
What’s Going To Happen
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
You know exactly what Wisconsin is going to do. It’s going to take a lead, it’ll take a nap, Illinois will get a few good chances, but will be held to field goals, and then the Bucky O line will take over.
Jonathan Taylor will hit 150 yards in the first half, and then the Badger D will take over against an Illinois offense that doesn’t have any playmakers.
