Ho hum.

It’s as if the college football world has forgotten about Washington.

After winning the Pac-12 title and going to the College Football Playoff, the Huskies have started out roaring, ripping through the first five games by a combined score of 220 to 54 – no one has come within three touchdowns of beating them.

But they’ve also beaten a whole slew of bad teams. Colorado is okay, but Rutgers, Montana, Fresno State and Oregon State is about as cupcakey as a schedule gets.

And now, they get three of their next four games at home.

Cal has been knocked down a few pegs after a great 3-0 start. USC came to Berkeley and won by ten, and Oregon’s offense rolled at will last week in Eugene.

But after this, three of the next four games are at home, and Stanford is just down the road. The Justin Wilcox era has started out well, but beat the Dawgs, and then it’s time to get fired up.

One Reason Why Cal Will Win

Cal has to figure out how to generate a little bit of pressure on Jake Browning.

The Washington quarterback has been way, way too comfortable so far behind a line that’s allowed just five sacks. He’s not just getting time to operate; he’s getting a shot to bomb away down the field.

The Cal defensive front was only able to get one sack over the last two weeks against USC and Oregon, but it was a nightmare for Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson and has been steady at getting behind the line against the run.

It’ll require some funky blitzes and changed up looks, but the Bear coaching staff is good enough to get creative in a hurry.

One Reason Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies might live in the Cal backfield.

The Bears are having a hard time keeping QB Ross Bowers clean, and they weren’t even close to keeping Oregon from making play after play behind the line.

The Ducks came up with seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss last week against the Bears, and while Washington might not quite get there, it might not be far off.

The Huskies didn’t bring the heat against Oregon State last week – they didn’t need to. But against Colorado, getting to the quarterback wasn’t a problem. When this defense wants to dial it up, it can.

What’s Going To Happen

Browning can have an off game here and there – he wasn’t great against Colorado – but he’s been deadly accurate when all the parts of the Washington offense are working.

The Dawgs will get out to a hot start, and will grind out the ground game from there. Browning threw for 378 yards and six touchdowns in last year’s 66-27 win over Cal, but it’ll be Myles Gaskin and the running game that’ll take over as the game goes on.

The Bears will be under too much pressure – the offense will stall too often in the first half before pressing in the second.
