The world is still waiting to see if Washington is any good.

Scratch that. Washington is good. The world is still waiting to see if Washington can be any good against a good team.

So far, there hasn’t been a win over anyone who’s a sure-thing to go bowling. Colorado might be close, but that’s a stretch.

Arizona State also falls into the category of not being a sure thing.

The Sun Devils have had two weeks to chill out after getting run over by Stanford, and now, with a trip to Utah up next and USC to follow, they need to raise their level of play and pull off a big upset.

Do that, and the Pac-12 season changes, and the Arizona State program might change with Todd Graham fully off a hot seat – at least for a little while.

One Reason Why Washington Will Win

Note to Arizona State: Do … not … punt.

The Sun Devil punting game has been rough, averaging under 39 yards per kick and with a problem in punt coverage. Allowing 8.9 yards per try isn’t all that awful, but it’s hardly a plus for a team with the nation’s third-worst punting game.

Enter Dante Pettis, who’s been a gamechanger whenever he gets the ball in his hands.

He returned a punt for a score in each of the first three games, and then teams stopped giving him a chance. Colorado and Oregon State didn’t let Pettis come up with a return, and then Cal gave it a shot.

Pettis averaged 17.7 yards per try.

Arizona State’s punting game isn’t good enough to keep it away from Pettis without giving Washington wonderful field position.

ASU is dead last in stopping kick returns, too.

One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win

Washington has yet to face a quarterback who can bomb away other than Colorado’s Steven Montez, and he hit 78% of his throws – they went nowhere, but he completed his passes.

Manny Wilkins threw for 298 yards or more in each of his first four games, and then was held down by Stanford to 181 yards and two picks. With two weeks off to gear it back up, he has to be razor-sharp.

He might not get a whole lot of time to work behind a leaky line that gives up too many sacks, but it’ll be bombs away. As long as he’s converting his third down throws, he’ll be doing his job.

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will give Washington more of a fight than it might like – at least for a little while.

Fired up and desperate for a good performance, they’re going to fire away early and give the Huskies problems, and then the Washington lines will take over.

Eventually, the Dawgs will get to Wilkins just enough to slow down the ASU O. The power running game will take over, and Washington will show why it’s a top five-caliber team.
