Virginia Tech is getting hot at just the right time.
The Hokies got past the loss to Clemson to whack a suddenly-good Boston College and North Carolina without breathing hard. And now they have to blow past the Blue Devils before diving into the meat of the schedule.
At Miami, at Georgia Tech – that’s what’s next. Win those two, get through Pitt and a trip to Virginia, and it’s off to the ACC Championship with a chance to get into the College Football Playoff at 12-1.
But first, the Hokies have to go through the formality of beating Duke.
The Blue Devils have gone cold at just the wrong time.
They were fantastic against Northwestern, and they rocked Baylor and North Carolina, but no one knew at the time that the Bears and Tar Heels would be so miserable.
The offense has fallen flat since then, and coming up with close wins is a problem with losses to Virginia, FSU and Pitt all by a touchdown each.
With three of the last four games on the road, it’s going to be tough to get two more wins to go bowling, but the shot is still there.
Getting by the Hokies would make the season and change around the ACC – and it would be one of the biggest wins in the David Cutcliffe era.
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
The defense continues to be terrific.
The offense might be having issues, but the pass rush is solid, the big plays from the secondary are there, and the timely stops have helped keep the team alive.
The Blue Devils might not be quite as strong on third downs as they were earlier in the year, but they’re slowing things down.
The Hokies are doing a nice job of keeping QB Josh Jackson clean, but now they’ll have to deal with a defensive front that can come up with big plays in chunks. Tech will have to hurry up its offense and passing game a bit more than it might like.
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
Yeah, the Blue Devils are doing a nice job against most passing games – allowing FSU to dink and dunk, and stopping Pitt cold – but Panther RB Darrin Hill went off on the Blue Devils for 254 rushing yards and three scores.
The Pitt ground game isn’t anything amazing, but all of a sudden, Duke’s having a hard time keeping decent backs from getting to the second level.
It’s been a little while since the Hokies ground game has gone off, but get ready for more of a commitment to pounding away.
On the other side, the last thing the Duke offense needs is to face an ultra-egressive defense that’s great at getting to the quarterback and is okay on third downs.
Virginia Tech is second in the nation at third down conversion defense and averages eight tackles for loss per game.
What’s Going To Happen
Virginia Tech will go through the motions and win this with ease.
The Duke defense will be plucky for a while, but the Hokies are playing too well to let down. The D will shut down the dying Blue Devil offense to a stop, Josh Jackson won’t make enough big mistakes, and it’ll be on to Miami without any drama.
