Boston College bounced back from a rough start to the season to easily get by Central Michigan. And now comes a wounded and angry Virginia Tech team that needs to bounce back from the loss to Clemson.
The Hokies are fine. They didn’t lose to a Coastal team, and dropping a game to the defending national champs isn’t a big deal. Run the table, get to the ACC Championship at 11-1, beat Clemson in a rematch, go to the College Football Playoff, win the national title.
It’s that simple.
But the BC defense is coming off its best performance of the season, the running game started to work again, and with four of the last six games on the road, this is a desperate team in need of an ACC win.
Virginia Tech can’t afford to blow this off, but win, and with North Carolina and Duke up next at home, everything will be set up for a showdown at Miami.
One Reason Why Boston College Will Win
Now there’s the Boston College running game we all know and love.
It hasn’t been there enough throughout the season, and it only averaged 4.2 yards per carry against Central Michigan, but AJ Dillon tore off 129 yards, Jon Hilliman ran for two scores, and the team was able to grind the game down and play it at the pace it likes.
Virginia Tech isn’t Central Michigan, but if BC can somehow get back into its running game groove at home, and if the secondary can continue to come up with big plays – it has seven picks on the year – it should be able to make this a fight.
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
Yeah, that whole Boston College running game thing? It’s probably not going to work against the Hokies defensive front.
Virginia Tech is fantastic at crashing rushing plays behind the line and it’s phenomenal at coming up with third down stops. To win, the Eagles have to control the clock and the tempo, and they have to keep the chains moving. Virginia Tech doesn’t let that happen – it’s great at owning the clock.
This is a rock-solid team in all phases. It lost to Clemson because it didn’t have the same NFL-level talent. But Josh Jackson threw well late, and the defense hardly got gouged against the Tiger balance.
All the things Boston College needs to do to win this game, Virginia Tech is better at.
What’s Going To Happen
The Hokies will have a wee bit of a Clemson hangover, but the lines will take over as the game goes on. Jackson will bounce back from from his two-pick performance, the running game will return, and the defensive line that came up with three sacks against the Tigers will stall the BC passing game.
