Virginia, was that a blip or a trend?
The Cavaliers were rolling right along with four straight wins to become the ACC’s biggest shocker, and then Boston College came to Charlottesville and left with a dominant 41-10 win.
All it’ll take is one more win for Virginia to go bowling, but with Georgia Tech, at Louisville, at Miami and Virginia Tech to close, it had better get the job done this week in Pittsburgh.
Pitt is in the opposite position.
The Panthers were in the midst of a total dud of a season that wasn’t going anywhere, and then came the 24-17 win over Duke to spark a little light of hope.
With a bad North Carolina team up next, a win over Virginia could and should mean a 5-5 record with Virginia Tech and Miami to close – and at least the hope of getting a split to go bowling.
One Reason Why Virginia Will Win
Kurt Benkert, it’s time to gear it up.
He had an off game against Boston College last week – the passing game didn’t go anywhere with he and Lindell Stone combining to throw three interceptions – but now the Cavaliers get to take target practice on the Panther secondary.
The Pitt pass defense was a bigger problem last year, but it’s still no prize, getting hit for almost 200 yards or more in every game but the loss to Georgia Tech – who ran wild – and Penn State.
The corners don’t make nearly enough big plays, there aren’t enough third down stops, and Benkert should be able to dink and dunk to his heart’s content. He’s not going to push the ball deep, but against the Panthers, he won’t have to.
But he has to have a great game, because …
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
The Virginia running game isn’t working.
The Cavaliers can’t get anything going on the ground, failing to hit 200 yards yet this season and not getting to 100 yards three times. That matters for a defense that has to force third-and-longs as much as humanly possible – the secondary can’t get off the field on manageable third down tries.
Virginia needs to control the ball, control the clock, and do whatever possible to with third down plays. For all of Pitt’s problems, it’s fantastic and owning the time of possession by slowing things down. Considering Virginia isn’t explosive, stall ball should work.
But if Darrin Hall wants to take off for a 92-yard dash like he did against Duke, that’s fine, too. He ran for 254 yards and three scores last week – Pitt needs more of that.
What’s Going To Happen
Benkert will bounce back.
There still won’t be the big downfield passes needed, but he won’t make the mistakes he did against Boston College, and the defense will be far stronger after getting picked clean.
Pitt will get down early, and won’t be able to throw its way back into the game.
