All of a sudden, two of the league’s regular also-rans are making some big noise.

Duke might have lost to Miami last week, but it’s been playing well enough to stay deep in the Coastal hunt with several of the big games ahead. Does Virginia count as a big one?

The Cavaliers had two weeks off to bask in the joy of the win over Boise State, and now they’re the last to start out the ACC season.

They’ve got a dangerous passing game, a tough enough defense with several top playmakers, and a terrific coaching staff – but Duke has all of that, too.

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

Kurt Benkert is spinning the ball as well as any quarterback in the ACC right now.

The veteran needed to step up and be the star of an offense that doesn’t have a dominant running game. Against Boise State he hit 19-of-29 passes for 273 yards and three scores. Most importantly, he didn’t turn it over.

On the year he has just one pick and ten touchdown passes. He’s been accurate, consistent, and he’s getting the ball out of his hands in a hurry. The line is giving him time, and he’s keeping the chains moving.

Virginia is eighth in the nation in third down conversion percentage, it’s great at controlling the clock, and it’s doing all the little things right tit didn’t last year. However …

One Reason Why Duke Will Win

Duke’s defense is dominant on third downs.

Offenses have converted just 11-of-62 third down tries on the Duke D so far, with Miami doing the best job of anyone, converting only 4-of-12 tries.

Also, as good as Virginia is at time of possession, Duke is even better at it, holding the ball for way over 35 minutes a game helped by a defense that owns the backfield and a solid rushing attack that gets plenty of options involved – seven Blue Devils got a carry against Miami.

So how did Duke lose to Miami? The passing game didn’t click down the field. There’s talent in the Virginia secondary, but it’ll give up yards – Boise State came up with 353 two weeks ago.

What’s Going To Happen

With the rest, and with the game at home, the Cavaliers will get a solid performance out of Benkert and the passing game, but it’ll be the defense that’ll be the difference.

As good as Duke has been, it’s had a hard time on the O line keeping everyone out of the backfield. The terrific Virginia pass rush will take over in the second half.
