It will forever be known as the beginning of the Sam Darnold era.

He played a little bit in the first three games of last year, but the Utah game was his first start. It would be the last time the Trojans would lose all year.

The team is underachieving, it’s not dominating, and there’s been too much of a fight in too many games.

It was gassed against Washington State, it struggled to get by Texas, and it’s been way too sluggish.

Like anyone is going to feel sorry for USC.

Lose this, and that’s it for any College Football Playoff hopes. Win, and get by Notre Dame on the road next week, and it’s relatively smooth sailing from there.

After getting run over by Stanford, Utah can get right back in the Pac-12 title hunt with three of its next four games at home. It’s not going to be easy, but this is a solid team with the talent to get by the Trojans – again.

One Reason Why Utah Will Win

The Trojans continue to be way, way too turnover prone.

It didn’t matter too much against Oregon State, but the three turnovers were a season-high after giving it up twice in each of the previous five games. The defense has do its part to make up for the miscues with takeaways, but it’ll be tough to win the turnover margin against the Utes.

Yes, Utah is very unUte-like in the way it gives the ball up – the O has ten turnovers on the year – but the defense has been swarming with 14 takeaways including five against San Jose State and five against Arizona.

Utah has to take advantage of every situation and generate the pressure right away. Get to Darnold, and he’ll give it up.

One Reason Why USC Will Win

Okay, okay, okay … Utah really is just as bad as USC at turnovers at certain times, and okay, okay, okay, the USC defensive ability to come up with interceptions and big plays really does overcome the offensive mistakes.

The secondary is swarming, coming up with nine interceptions on the season led by the four cranked up against Cal. With Tyler Huntley still out for the Utes, Troy Williams – who did a nice job against Stanford overall – has to press a little bit to make the offense work like it did with its banged up starter.

Williams threw two picks against Stanford.

There’s a fumbling issue as a team, too.

Utah will have to be a +2 to win this on the road, and it won’t be.

What’s Going To Happen

So … you think turnovers will matter?

They will but it’ll be about the running game, and Utah won’t do it well enough to pull this off. It’ll have a few nice moments, though.

This isn’t the Utah team of years past that used to walk in, bludgeon a defense, and move on. USC’s backs will do the part, with Ronald Jones II and company balancing out a solid day from Darnold.

This is the game to go smashmouth again, and Utah won’t do it.
