Is this the Pac-12 South championship?
Arizona will have its say in the matter, but it’s got a nasty final stretch starting with Washington State this week – and it still has to go to USC and Arizona State.
USC’s season isn’t over, even though it seems like it after getting obliterated by Notre Dame in a 49-14 disaster. The College Football Playoff is off the table now, but if it can get out of Tempe alive, and it can survive Arizona next week, beating Colorado and UCLA shouldn’t be an issue on the way to the Pac-12 Championship Game.
But Arizona State is on fire.
The Sun Devils were playing well, but they were 2-3 with the season appearing to slip away. The defense went from awful to amazing, it shut down Washington, picked off Utah, and now it’s got everything there for the taking.
Colorado, at UCLA, at Oregon State, Arizona. That’s the remaining schedule. If ASU is good enough to beat Washington and USC, it’s good enough to get through the rest of the slate.
One Reason Why USC Will Win
For all of the good things Arizona State is doing, the offensive line is having a problem.
There won’t be any Josh Adams-like home runs being hit from all over the field.
ASU is getting the job done with timely defense, takeaways, and just enough from the O. The running game has come up with 200 yards in two of the last three games, but it was stuffed by Washington, and it’s got a problem with defensive fronts getting behind the line.
USC wasn’t able to do enough to stop Notre Dame – duh – but the defensive front has a good pass rush to bother Manny Wilkins and slow down the ASU passing game that’s been just okay.
For all the good things ASU has done, Wilkins is good at completing passes, but doesn’t bomb away.
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
You like capitalize on takeaways, Arizona State? Well do we have the team for you.
The offense might not be lighting it up, but it took advantage of four interceptions against Utah last week to win in a surprisingly easy 30-10 gamechanger.
ASU might not take a whole slew of chances, but it also doesn’t give the ball away with just six turnovers on the season, no lost fumbles in the last three games, and with five games without an interception.
USC and Sam Darnold are more than happy to provide a steady stream of giveaways with two in each of the first five games, and three in the last three.
The defense has been able to come up with its share of takeaways, but the giveaways have been more painful – they’re keeping lesser teams in games.
What’s Going To Happen
Even with all of the mistakes, USC is always able to rise up and survive at home.
But it’s not able to do it away from the Coliseum.
The Trojans are having issues on the road – playing Wazzu and Notre Dame had something to do with it – but they overcome the problems on their home turf. On the road, the takeaways were there against Cal, but there was just one in the two losses.
The ASU offense just isn’t good enough, but he defense has been able to get the job done. On a banged up ankle, Darnold will give it up a few times, ASU will be a +2 in turnover margin, and they’ll survive in a nail-biter.
