Tennessee is still 3-2 – there’s still plenty of time to make this a solid season.
The SEC East hopes might be gone, and there’s still Alabama to deal with, but getting to ten wins isn’t out of the question as long as there’s no slip up against South Carolina.
This has been a strange, interesting season for the Gamecocks. Good enough to beat NC State and blowout Arkansas, and flaky enough to lose to Kentucky at home, this is a Will Muschamp team – it plays up or down with everyone.
Even with two losses in SEC play, there’s still plenty of hope to stay in the conference title chase with Georgia and Florida still to play. But there can’t be a loss to the Vols.
One Reason Why Tennessee Will Win
The Tennessee defense needs to rise up and rock. The two weeks off should do the line plenty of good.
Arkansas didn’t take advantage of a shaky South Carolina offensive front. The Gamecock running game wasn’t there – coming up with just 159 yards against the Hogs – and now the pass rush and the plays behind the line should start coming from the Vol D.
The Gamecocks don’t have an explosive offense, relying on takeaways and limiting mistakes. They’re No. 1 in the nation in fewest penalty yards, but Tennessee isn’t bad when it comes to getting flagged.
USC was +4 against Arkansas in the 48-22 win. That can’t happen. However …
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
This team just never, ever screws up.
The Gamecocks have won the turnover margin three times, lost the two times they were even, and struggled to get by Louisiana Tech the one time they were in the negative. Meanwhile, USC has been flagged a grand total of six times in the last three games.
When it got hit with a season-high seven penalties – and turned it over a season-high two times – against Kentucky, it lost.
Tennessee is a -4 in turnover margin on the year going a -6 over the last four games.
The Vols don’t have a strong enough offense, and they’re not good enough at keeping the chains moving, to make South Carolina’s offense press.
What’s Going To Happen
Is Tennessee ready to rise up and take its season back?
Not against South Carolina it’s not.
Jake Bentley has been solid enough to not force the big mistakes Tennessee will need – he hasn’t thrown a pick in either of the last two games – and the woeful running game will be just effective enough to get to 150 yards. USC is 3-0 when getting to the 100-yard rushing mark – it’ll do that.
