Considering the Cardinal beat Arizona State, it’s the Pac-12’s best team right now vs. the worst, but the best might be without any Love.
Will Heisman candidate Bryce Love be able to roll on an injured ankle? He’s supposedly a gametime decision, but the bigger question might be whether or not it’s worth the risk.
With a road game at Washington State up next, and then Washington to follow, will he sit if he’s not right? No one appears to be that concerned about it one way or another.
Oregon State came up with one of its better performances of the season in a 36-33 loss to Colorado, but with a little time to prepare, will interim head coach Cory Hall have something for the Cardinal? Can the Beavers pull off a Pac-12 shocker to shake up the race?
One Reason Why Stanford Will Win
Oregon State has a big problem with teams that can bring a little bit of power. Stanford – Love or no Love – can bring just a wee bit of pop to the table.
How rough has it been on the Beavers? It hasn’t been totally miserable, but they’re a mortal lock to give up 200 yards or more against anyone who wants to give it a try. It’s more about the steady drip than the home run, but the Cardinal ground game can do both.
There are options to keep Love fresh with Trevor Speights coming up with a strong game against Oregon, and Cameron Scarlett a decent option, too. For a ground game that seems like it’s able to hit 200 yards on every Love run, the great O line will open things up wide for all the backs.
One Reason Why Oregon State Will Win
The Beaver offense finally got moving a few weeks ago.
It’s been a hard run for an offense that wasn’t able to find much of anything positive under Gary Andersen. But against the Buffs, Darell Garretson started coming up with a few big passes to open the attack up a bit.
But it was Ryan Nall who got everything going, running for 172 yards and three scores, looking very Love-like along the way.
Can the Oregon State offense operate against the Cardinal with a little bit of time? The Cardinal defensive front is just okay at getting into the backfield, and the Beaver offensive line is solid at keeping defenses from crashing behind the line.
What’s Going To Happen
The Cardinal will need a little bit to get the offense moving against a fired up Beaver team at home, but eventually, the reality will set in.
Stanford will convert third down after third down, forcing Oregon State to try throwing to get back into the game after a rough second quarter.
The Beavers will have early opportunities, and they’ll blow them with turnovers and stalled drives.
