Normally, this would be the battle for the dishonor of being the 14th-best team in a league that calls itself the Big Ten, but Purdue has changed the script this year.
It’s not about to take down the Big Ten title in Jeff Brohm’s first season, but it’s more than just competitive, it already has three wins under its belt.
With Illinois coming up in a few weeks, and winnable home games against Nebraska and Indiana, bowl is almost certain with a win over the red-hot Scarlet Knights.
After a brutal start to the season, Rutgers came up with a 35-24 win at Illinois to provide at least a slight ray of sunshine. It’s going to be a rough run the rest of the way for a team that’s undermanned and still building, but it finally go the running game going.
Now, at home, it has to test the Boilermaker front and try to make it two in a row.
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
Rutgers really, really doesn’t have a passing game.
It has yet to hit 200 yards in any game, he hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in the last three games, and it’s given up two interceptions in all four losses – and none in the two wins.
The Purdue secondary will get a week off, but the defense should be good for a few takeaways to help make things easier.
The Boilermakers are second in the Big Ten with 15 forced turnovers, the linebackers can tee off against a running game that’ll try to control the clock, and there won’t be any worries about getting hit with anything big down the field.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
For all of the problems and issues, the Scarlet Knight secondary can take away the ball, too.
Rutgers has seven interceptions in the last four games, and that’s without getting any against Ohio State.
The pass rush isn’t there, but the defensive backs have been more aggressive and doing a better job of taking a few chances.
But to win, this has to be the Gus Edwards show.
Rutgers likes to grind the game out, and with Edwards pounding away for two scores and 91 yards last week against Illinois, and the team running for close to six yards per carry, the gameplan worked.
What’s Going To Happen
Rutgers will be feisty at home against a Purdue offense that won’t go off, but there won’t be enough from the passing attack to keep things moving when Edwards and company get stuffed.
