Turnovers Will Be Key To The Game For Rams And Aggies

If travelling to Tuscaloosa and Honolulu wasn’t enough travel for one season, the Colorado State Rams are on the road again this weekend. This time the flight is a little shorter as they hop on over to Logan, Utah to take on the 3-2 Utah State Aggies Saturday afternoon.

Colorado State is coming off a 30 point win at Hawaii this past Saturday (or Sunday morning if you live in Ft. Collins). Senior quarterback Nick Stevens had a solid game against Hawaii (351 yards and 4 touchdowns) but will have a tougher task this week as the Aggies have 7 interceptions through 5 games and 5 of those are from their senior cornerback Jalen Davis. Overall, the Aggies have created 16 turnovers.

Decision making and ball security will be key so look for Stevens completion percentage to be a little down as sometimes it’s better to throw the ball away than to squeeze one into a receiver surrounded by a ballhawk secondary.

“They create havoc on defense because of the different looks and sometimes it causes a little bit of confusion at the quarterback,” Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo stated at his Monday press conference. He continued, “we gotta protect the ball on the road. cannot turn the ball over.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Colorado State will look to improve their pass rush but that will be easier said than done.

Aggies quarterback Kent Myers stats may not ‘wow’ people but he is a 3 year starter and even started a few games back in 2014. Utah State’s uptempo offense combined with what turned out to be essentially a short week of practice for the Rams (they didn’t practice on Monday to give the players a bit more time to rest after the long flight from Hawaii) does not bode well for the Rams defense.

“We got to mix things up a little bit. Give some guys some different looks and we gotta find a way to affect the quarterback,” Bobo stated. “You don’t affect the quarterback, it’s going to be a long day.”

A matchup to watch closely is Utah State’s Davis on Colorado State wide receiver Michael Gallup. It’s an NFL type matchup and will force Stevens to spread the ball around which he does well anyway.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at 2:30pm Mountain Time and can be seen AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain.
