Neither team is good enough to make any noise in the ACC title chase – or in their respective divisions – but they each could really, really use this win to keep hopes of going bowling alive.

The Orange have lost two straight, but they gave both LSU and NC State runs on the road. Now back in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome, this is when the offense needs to crank it back up.

With Clemson, at Miami, and at Florida State up next, lose this = season effectively over.

Syracuse has played some big boys, but Pitt has had its share of problems, too, against Penn State, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech. Now the Panthers are playing someone their own size.

Their schedule is a whole lot lighter than Syracuse’s, but with NC State up next, and Virginia Tech and Miami late, they could use a real, live win over a decent team.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange receivers have been fantastic lately.

QB Eric Dungey is throwing well – he had a nice day in the loss to NC State – but Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips are doing a whole lot to help the cause.

Ishmael dominated over the first two games with 26 catches, and he leads the team with 51 grabs on the yards as the steady and primary target, but it was Philips who’s been the main man over the last few games.

After coming up with 11 grabs for 93 yards and a score against LSU, Philips hit NC State for 17 catches for 188 yards. Last year against Pitt? 11 catches for 107 yards.

One Reason Why Pitt Will Win

Now there’s the Max Browne everyone was hoping for.

After a rocky start, the former USC transfer found his skills against Rice in last week’s 42-10 win. Yes, Rice is awful, but it doesn’t matter – Browne did a heck of a job completing 38-of-42 passes for 410 yards and four scores.

The passing game really, really needed this after an inconsistent start, and now Browne should get plenty of time to operate against a Syracuse defense that doesn’t generate any sort of a pass rush.

Every big play and every break will count in this. Syracuse gets flagged a whole bunch, and Pitt doesn’t. The Panthers need to win the penalty battle by at least four.

What’s Going To Happen

Can this please be close to as good as last year’s 76-61 Pitt win in that defensive slugfest?

The two offenses will have a whole bunch of fun again in a back-and-forth shootout, but it won’t be anywhere near as wild as last year’s battle.

Neither team will run the ball a lick. The Syracuse passing game will be a little bit better in key spots, and the defense will come up with a few extra third down stops, with two big ones in the fourth quarter to hang on.
