The winner of this team will get a bit of a groove back, while the loser will be in really, really big trouble.
Duke might have banked four wins, but it’s lost three straight and has to go on the road for three of its final four games. Lose this, and it’ll have to win two of the last four – that’s going to be a problem with Virginia Tech and Wake Forest on the road, and Georgia Tech at home.
Pitt has been awful, with Rice the lone FBS victory so far. There were some competitive moments, but not enough of them.
Unlike Duke, three of the last four games are at home, but lose to the Blue Devils, and the Panthers will have to win out to get to a bowl game. With a road game at Virginia Tech and a home date with Miami, that’s not going to happen.
Going back to 1966, Pitt has won six of the last seven.
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
The Duke offense has stopped. Playing Miami, Virginia and Florida State has something to do with that – Pitt’s defense isn’t in that category – but the offense that scored in bunches early on has hit a wall.
The Blue Devil ground game hit the 200-yard mark without a problem over the first three games, was okay against North Carolina, and has been steadily worse as the season has gone, on. The rushing totals have decreased in each of the last five games.
Pitt’s defense as a whole hasn’t been a plus, but the secondary – for the second straight season – has been the big problem. Duke won’t blow up through the air.
This should be a relatively low-scoring game if everything goes according to plan for Pitt. Stay in range, don’t be gouged defensively, and take advantage or every opportunity.
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
The Duke running game might be going downhill, but the Pitt ground attack isn’t doing much of anything.
The Panthers haven’t hit the 100-yard mark in three of the last four games. Other than the 129 yards coming against Syracuse, Pitt hasn’t averaged more than four yards per carry in any game.
Putting pressure on the Pitt quarterbacks isn’t a plus.
Ben Dinucci and Kenny Pickett couldn’t get the passing game going against NC State, and now the Panther backfield has to deal with a Duke defense that’s fantastic at getting behind the line and being disruptive.
What’s Going To Happen
Duke won’t exactly look like it did over the first few weeks, but the defensive front will keep Pitt’s offense from being remotely consistent, and the offense will come up with just enough points early on to be able to coast a bit.
The Blue Devils aren’t an ACC power, but they’ll prove they belong in the middle of the pack.
