The win over Kansas State seems like it was five years ago.

Vanderbilt puffed its chest out, and ever since then, nothing good has happened.

The defense flopped against Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and now it’s going to take a little work to get to a bowl game. There’s time – there isn’t another game that Vandy can’t win – but winning at Ole Miss would be nice.

The Rebels have nothing to lose this season and can play loose and free – there’s no bowl game for a program that’s taking a redshirt season – but they’re struggling. Finally they’re back at home after a rough three game road trip, and now they have to hold serve.

2-0 at home, 0-3 on the road, five of the next six games are in Oxford – they only leave Mississippi once the rest of the way. The schedule isn’t all that bad, but lose to the Commodores, and there could be a problems with LSU up next.

One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodore offense isn’t screwing up, and Ole Miss might need mistakes and turnovers to pull this off.

With just three turnovers so far, a terrific pass defense, and a solid O line, there are enough nice pieces to beat the mediocre to bad teams.

There’s absolutely nothing to worry about from an absent Ole Miss ground game that hasn’t hit the 100-yard mark since getting to 102 in the opener against South Alabama. The Rebels have yet to average four yards per carry or more in any game.

They’re not going to go off this week, either.

One Reason Why Ole Miss Will Win

Score early on Vanderbilt, and the Commodore O will have a problem.

This isn’t an attack built on making big comebacks, or to bomb away. It has to crank up the running game, be way-too-careful with the passing game, and then expect the defense to take care of the rest.

Yes, the Ole Miss running game has been a problem, and the Vandy rushing attack hasn’t been any better. It has yet to run for more than 71 yards against any FBS team, getting stuffed for fewer than three yards per carry against everyone but Alabama A&M.

Ole Miss isn’t getting much from its D up front, but it’ll sell out to stop Ralph Webb and and Vandy running game, expect QB Kyle Shurmur to dink and dunk, and take chances that nothing will happen deep.

What’s Going To Happen

Shea Patterson will have problems cranking up the big production against a Vanderbilt D that really is good, and now gets to play someone its own size again.

The Ole Miss offense was able to roll by South Alabama and UT Martin, and no one else.

The Commodores will rise up with a good defensive performance, the running game will finally start to work again, and they’ll be back on track for a bowl game.
