If there’s such a thing as a Big 12 playoff game, this might count as one.
The loser isn’t out, but there will be a giant traffic jam to get through to get into one of the two spots for the championship game.
And for Oklahoma State, it’s still in the College Football Playoff chase, too.
It only has the one loss to TCU. If it wins out, beats the Horned Frogs in a rematch in the Big 12 title game, it’ll almost certainly get in. But it’ll take a big performance to get past this likely shootout, and then move on to Oklahoma.
West Virginia is in the Lost To TCU Club, too, and there’s no break the rest of the way. On the plus side, it gets three of the next four games at home – and then it finishes up at Oklahoma.
There’s no room for a misfire at home. But beat the Cowboys, and all of a sudden, the Mountaineers are going to be major players.
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Both teams can fire away, and both teams will put up yards and points. But Oklahoma State has a little more pop, and they do more of the other things right.
West Virginia can match the Cowboys big pass for big pass, but the OSU punt return and punting game are fantastic, the offense is No. 1 in the country – even after struggling against Texas – and the defense can play a little bit, especially against the run.
The West Virginia D gives up almost 100 more yards per game, mostly in the secondary.
Oklahoma State has a better shot at hitting the home run and putting up just a few more home runs. In a game that might come down to the team that can push the ball a little bit deeper on one big play, the Cowboys have a slight advantage. But …
One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win
The Mountaineer D is stunningly strong on third downs.
For all of the big plays the West Virginia defense allows, and for all the big yards, it’s okay at getting off the field from time to time.
It might have melted down late in the close call against Baylor, but it did a great job of stopping the Bears on third downs. On the year, teams are converting on 32% of their tries.
So while Oklahoma State might be a wee bit better at coming up with the huge pass play, in a game that could come down to one big moment, the Mountaineers are better at getting their defense off the field.
What’s Going To Happen
Will Grier and Mason Rudolph are about to put on a wild and crazy show.
WVU’s David Sills and Oklahoma State’s James Washington will be on everyone’s All-America wide receiver short list – they’re about to have some fun – but the two quarterbacks are the ones everyone will be talking about.
As good as Rudolph and the Cowboys are, at home, this will be Grier’s moment. He’s been outstanding, hitting the 300-yard mark in every game so far, coming off his season-high 375-yard day against Baylor. And now he’ll keep it all going.
