163 points. An average of 54 points per game. That’s what Ohio State has put up in the three meeting against Maryland.

Only 400 miles apart, you’d have thought these two would’ve played over the long history of college football, but nope. They first met in 2014 when the Terps joined the conference, and it hasn’t been pretty in any of the three games.

But this year’s Maryland team appears to be different. It’s a plucky squad that battled through quarterback injuries to beat Texas in the opener and Minnesota in Minneapolis.

And now that playing well on the road thing is being put to the ultimate test against an Ohio State team that woke up after the Oklahoma loss.

Ever since the 31-16 debacle, the Buckeyes have been fantastic. Granted, blowing out Army, UNLV and Rutgers isn’t any big deal, but OSU might have needed a bit of a reboot. It seems like it has the offense back to where it needs to be, but again …

Army, UNLV and Rutgers.

Maryland’s defense is a wee bit better.

One Reason Why Maryland Will Win

With the exception of the punt coverage team, this is a good, sound Maryland team that appears to be fearless. It hit a wall in the puzzling blowout loss to UCF, but the defensive front pitched a gem against Minnesota.

The Gophers are a grinding power team that was held to just 80 yards and no big runs. Everything was swarmed over right away by Jermaine Carter, Shane Cockerille and company coming up with key stops at the right times.

Yeah, the Ohio State zone-read look is starting to look the part, but the passing attack is still a bit of a question mark considering the shaky competition over the last few weeks.

Maryland can be thrown on, but it wins its share of battles with five interceptions so far and a slew of clutch third down stops.

One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win

The machine is humming now.

The Buckeyes already new it had something in J.K. Dobbins, but now they have Mike Weber all but back to form as he fights through a hamstring problem. Weber ran for three scores against Rutgers, Dobbins tore off a few big plays, and J.T. Barrett cranked out 78 yards taking off now and then.

Yes, Maryland third-string quarterback Max Bortenschlager had a strong game against Minnesota, and the 1-2 rushing punch of Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison III was great, but the Ohio State defensive front is living behind the line.

Minnesota couldn’t generate any pressure and wasn’t able to attack the run before it could get going. The Buckeyes won’t have that issue.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has to face a real team now with a real defense and enough talent to make this a fight for a while, but the offensive weapons will be too much in the second half.

The Buckeye defense will make the plays Minnesota’s D didn’t, and Barrett will make the key throws the Gophers weren’t able to come up with in the clutch.
