Notre Dame might be a whole lot better than you think.

The running game has been devastating – putting teams away early on in game after game – and the defense has been just fine.

And now, very slowly, America is starting to come around to see just how good this team might be – especially with Georgia rocking and rolling through the SEC.

That 20-19 loss in South Bend could’ve gone either way, and while Notre Dame now can’t slip the rest of the way if it wants to get into the College Football Playoff, it was as acceptable as a defeat can be this season.

But now the Irish have to keep rolling through the mediocre teams without breathing hard.

North Carolina has been desperately banged up in places it couldn’t afford to lose key players, and now it has to come up with a win or else the season is effectively over.

The Tar Heels aren’t good enough to roll through the rest of the slate if it starts out 1-5.

One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win

North Carolina doesn’t have a prayer of slowing down the Irish rushing attack.

Notre Dame is quick-hitting, it’s getting its guys in space well, and it’s utilizing its NFL-caliber blockers up front to blast away in game after game. Georgia was able to hold the Irish down to just 55 yards, but that’s Georgia.

North Carolina’s injured defense wasn’t even close to slowing down the Georgia Tech option offense – allowing 403 yards and three scores – and got ripped apart by Louisville, too.

The effort is there, but the depth isn’t. The offense isn’t coming up with enough first downs, it’s having a problem on third down conversions, and the defense isn’t able to pick up the slack.

Blink against Notre Dame, and it could be 21-0 going into the second quarter.  However …

One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win

Is Brandon Wimbush okay?

The star quarterback of the Irish attack is fighting through a foot injury. While he’s able to run a bit, can he be the same home-run hitter who’s been so dominant at times?

Ian Book is a nice prospect with a great upside, but there’s a problem if he’s under center in anything other than blowout/garbage-time mode.

No matter who’s at quarterback, the passing game has to improve. It’s inefficient, it’s inconsistent, and it functions only to do throw a wrinkle into the attack.

With a great punting game, North Carolina has to pin the Irish deep, try to hold up for two downs, and force the passing game to get the job done.

What’s Going To Happen

The Tar Heels just don’t have the players.

Chazz Surratt is a great-looking young quarterback, but he’s missing the weapons to make the passing game shine. The running game isn’t doing enough to help him out, either.

If Wimbush isn’t rocking and rolling, Josh Adams and the rest of the Irish backfield will pick up the slack. It’ll be another impressive performance for a Notre Dame team that has figured out its system – it’s playing with confidence now.
