Five Thoughts: 1. Win Out, Notre Dame, And You’re In The College Football Playoff. Maybe

With its brutal schedule, Notre Dame has a great shot to get into the College Football Playoff – even with a loss.

There’s still a whole lot of work to do, but blasting USC was a great step.

If Alabama or Georgia wins the SEC Championship with a 13-0 record, and if Wisconsin or Penn State takes the Big Ten title unscathed, and if TCU wins the Big 12 going 13-0, and if Miami is 13-0 with an ACC championship, then those are your four College Football Playoff teams no matter what.

Anything other than that – depending to some extent on what happens to Georgia the rest of the way – if your 2017 Notre Dame Fighting Irish finish the season at 11-1, put them in the CFP.

If you’re shocked in any way by what happened on Saturday night in South Bend – and, apparently, a whole slew of you are – you haven’t been watching Notre Dame this year. The Irish have been doing that to everyone but Georgia.

As it turns out, Georgia is really, really good, and Notre Dame lost in a 20-19 battle that could’ve gone either way. But it’s a loss, and the Irish don’t have a conference championship to play for, so everything else has to be perfect.

Like the schedule.

Winning at Boston College 49-20? That looks terrific now.

How about handing Michigan State its only loss of the season, winning by 20 in East Lansing?

And beating USC 49-14 with most of the world watching – at least for a few minutes – wasn’t bad, either.

But the rest of the schedule makes it a good news/bad news thing for the Irish.

The bad, the schedule is beyond brutal. The good, the schedule is beyond brutal. Get through it, and it’ll be almost impossible to make a case against Notre Dame for the playoff because of the deserve factor.

The blasting of USC was terrific – now beat a red-hot NC State team. And then beat a solid Wake Forest team that’ll go bowling.

Oh yeah, and hand Miami its first loss of the season, doing it down in Miami.

And then handle Navy and its option attack, and then finish it all up with a win at Stanford.

In all, there’s an outside shot Notre Dame will play seven teams that’ll end up in their respective conference championship games. But even if it’s more like four or five, the slate is amazing.

11-1, the one loss by one to Georgia – if that happens, good luck arguing against giving the Irish a spot in the four.
