Alright, NC State. Now that you’ve come up with wins over Florida State and Louisville, and now that you’re on a five-game winning streak with a trip to Notre Dame up next and Clemson to follow.
Don’t miss the layup.
Pitt has been a mess so far. The offense isn’t doing enough, the defense hasn’t even been close, and now the season is in danger of going under if it’s a 2-5 start with road games at Duke and Virginia Tech and home games with Virginia, North Carolina and Miami to go.
One Reason Why NC State Will Win
Syracuse doesn’t have any pass rush whatsoever, and it was able to get into the Pitt backfield last week.
It all ties together. The Pitt offensive line can’t keep defenses out of the backfield, the passing game isn’t working, and the third down conversions aren’t there.
The Panther offense isn’t moving, and this isn’t the defense to go against when the line is struggling.
Pitt Panthers, meet Bradley Chubb and the NC State defensive front that’s cranked up 17 sacks so far and game Lamar Jackson a nightmare of a time last week. However …
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
It’s possible to throw on the Wolfpack defense.
Syracuse hit the 385-yard mark, and Lamar Jackson was Lamar Jackson, throwing for 354 yards and a score. Marshall tossed for 350 yards, and even FSU freshman James Blackman hit the 278-yard mark.
Pitt’s offense might not be steady, but the passing game has had its moments. Max Browne and Ben Dinucci weren’t bad against Syracuse – they didn’t throw any picks. But now Browne is done for the year after suffering a shoulder problem.
As long as Pitt is able to keep pushing the ball a little bit, and if the defense can hold up just enough to keep the team in the game, at home, this might be when the quarterbacks finally come through.
What’s Going To Happen
As good as NC State might be, it tends to play up or down to the competition a bit. No one’s hotter than QB Ryan Finley, and he’ll be solid again against a miserable Pitt secondary, but the Panthers will keep this from being a total wipeout.
Give it three quarters, and then Chubb and the Wolfpack defensive front will take over.
