Is Kentucky still ready to be a factor in the SEC race?
It’s one tough ending against Florida away from being 5-0, but win this, and with at Mississippi State, Tennessee and Ole Miss up next before going to Vanderbilt, there’s a shot to go on a good run to an amazing record.
But the team isn’t all that great. It’s been solid, but not sensational. Missouri, through, hasn’t been anything by awful.
The Tigers have had two weeks off to try to reassess and recruit after getting ripped apart over a three-game losing stretch by a combined score of 117-30.
The defense has been bad, the offense hasn’t worked, and there hasn’t been a whole lot of fun so far. With Georgia up next before a relatively easy stretch against Idaho and UConn.
Other than Georgia and maybe Florida, there isn’t a game left on the schedule Missouri shouldn’t be able to hang with.
And that includes Kentucky.
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
The Kentucky offense just isn’t working.
It’s an opportunistic team that manages to get by with a decent defense and just enough from the offense to survive, but the Wildcats are only averaging 322 yards per game.
The line is the biggest culprit, struggling in pass protection and giving up way too many plays behind the line. Eastern Michigan came up with five sacks and ten tackles for loss against the Wildcats last week, and now a rested Mizzou has to find a spark that hasn’t been there yet.
There’s upside on offense. If the Tigers can get out to an early start, the UK O that sputters way too much will have a hard time opening it up.
One Reason Why Kentucky Will Win
Missouri just never, ever, ever has the ball.
It’s partly because it can’t get a meaningful this down stops and it’s partly because it’s last in the nation in turnover margin. But time of possession appears to be one of the biggest issues for an offense that would like to strike quickly, and can’t.
On the opposite side, Kentucky has dominated the turnover margin, coming into the game 11th in the nation at a +1.4. The offense also holds on to the ball for 31:27 a game thanks to a defense that comes up with the third down plays Missouri’s defense doesn’t.
What’s Going To Happen
Even with the time off, Missouri will still struggle to do all the little things right.
Kentucky will be a +2 in turnover margin and should have the ball for way over 35 minutes. Slow and steady will win the race as UK will let Missouri make mistakes, and then capitalize with just enough key scores at the right time to stay comfortably ahead.
