So, does this mean Michigan State is good again?

The Spartans were dismissed after getting blown out at home by Notre Dame, and getting by Iowa 17-10 was no big deal.

And then, Mark Dantonio and his defense pitched a 14-10 gem in the rain and wind in Ann Arbor.

Now, the Spartans are 2-0 in the Big Ten with a relatively easy run with Minnesota, Indiana and Northwestern up before the Penn State-Ohio State back-to-back battles.

Minnesota, all of a sudden, is in big trouble.

Before the season, a home game against Maryland and a road date at Purdue looked like an automatic 2-0 Big Ten start for P.J. Fleck’s team. But the offense couldn’t come through in the clutch in either game, and the defense gave up 31 in each loss.

It might take a major disaster to miss out on a bowl game, but losing to the Spartans at home will put the pressure on.

MSU has won the last four meetings going back to 2009.

One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win

Minnesota has a decent enough defense and running game to be decent, but the lack of a passing attack has turned into a mega-liability.

The Gophers couldn’t throw last year, either, but it was at least competent at times. This year, even when the passing game sort of worked – like with the 229 yards against Maryland – interceptions became a problem.

If the running attack isn’t controlling the game, forget about it.

Michigan State might not have the most scintillating offense, and the defense might not have any stars, but no one’s running all that well on the Spartan defensive front.

Notre Dame’s ground attack is hitting more home runs than Aaron Judge, and it was held to under five yards per carry. The 182 yards were the most allowed so far by a mile, and the Irish got three of the five touchdowns Sparty has allowed so far.

Minnesota isn’t Notre Dame.

One Reason Why Minnesota Will Win

Michigan State’s style plays to what Minnesota needs.

The Gophers will never be able to stay with a high-powered offensive team, or mount any sort of a big comeback attempt. They have to play teams that grind out the clock, play tough defense, and rely on turnovers and mistakes to win.

Michigan State is 13th in the nation in time of possession. Minnesota is 6th.

Michigan State’s turnover margin is +0.2. Minnesota’s is +0.8.

Minnesota leads the Big Ten in fewest penalties. Michigan State is 12th.

At home, the Gophers have to keep the game close – they have the lines to do it – and hope the little things and the mistakes go their way.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota’s offense will stall way too often.

Michigan State doesn’t have the offensive pop to ever pull away, but the defense will come through time and again on big third down stops. The Gophers have to outgain the Spartans on the ground, and they won’t be able to do it.

It’ll be all about the ball control and field position – Michigan State will win both.
