Michigan State (5-1) vs. Indiana (3-3) Game Preview
Broadcast, TV, Game Time
Date: Saturday, October 21st
Game Time: 3:30 pm ET
Venue: Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, MI
3-0 in the Big Ten, and with a win over Michigan, Michigan State is deep in the hunt for the East title if it can keep this all going. There’s absolutely nothing flashy, it’s a struggle to put games away, but beating Iowa, and winning on the road in Ann Arbor and Minnesota is solid.
Now it’s time to build up the base of wins. Take out a decent Indiana team at home, win at Northwestern, and all of a sudden at 5-0 in the Big Ten, Penn State comes to East Lansing early in November after playing Michigan and Ohio State.
0-3 in the Big Ten, Indiana might be having a rough run, but the three losses are to Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. Are the Hoosiers good, and they just so happen to be playing all the stars of the East right away? Or are they mediocre-to-bad – and they just so happen to be playing all the stars of the East right away?
The schedule eases up a bit over the second half – there’s still Wisconsin to deal with – but a win should make a bowl game a lock with Rutgers and Illinois on the slate.
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
What’s Michigan State doing right? The run defense has been fantastic.
It’s not cranking up the pass rush, and it’s not dominating behind the line, but it’s not allowing much of anything. Iowa was stuffed for 19 yards, Michigan 102, and Minnesota 74 – and those three have to run the ball to win, and didn’t.
Indiana’s running game isn’t anything like the powerhouse of the previous few seasons, and Peyton Ramsey and the passing attack isn’t making up for it.
The Hoosiers don’t have the offense to blow up if needed against the MSU D. Phenomenal at taking the air out of the ball, the Spartans own the clock.
Indiana is last in the Big Ten in time of possession.
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
There’s almost nothing explosive about the Michigan State offense. It’s tough, it’s physical, and it’s occasionally efficient, but the Spartan style continues to revolve around running hard, playing tough D, and keeping control of the clock.
The passing game can work – and it has – but that gets the Spartans out of their comfort zone. The stats might not show it, but the Hoosier run defense really is solid. It holds up great for about three quarters – at least it did against Ohio State and Michigan – but it shut down Saquon Barkley and has been solid overall.
Michigan State isn’t the type of team that’ll pull away. Somehow, come up with a few early scores, stay in it, hope for for the big moment late to pull this off.
What’s Going To Happen
Michigan State will go Michigan State.
It’ll be maddening in the way it can’t pull away and put it out of reach without a struggle, but it’ll seem like it always has the ball, and the defense will do its part with a whole slew of third down stops.
These are two of the three best defenses in the conference on third downs. Don’t expect a whole slew of great drives or anything flashy.
