1987. That was the last time Indiana was able to shock Michigan in the painfully one-sided rivalry. But none of that matters right now.

14-10. That matters.

That’s what happened to Michigan last week at home in the rivalry loss to Michigan State. And now the team with one of the best defenses in America, and with an okay enough schedule to realistically think about winning the Big Ten and going to the College Football Playoff, has a whole slew of question marks.

Can it win a close game again against a great team under Jim Harbaugh?

Can the offense step up and start to look more explosive?

Can Indiana avoid an 0-3 start in Big Ten play after already losing to Ohio State and Penn State?

This is a good, competitive team that should end up in the mix for a bowl game with Illinois and Rutgers ahead to get to five wins, and then it’ll take a mild upset to get to six.

If that win breaks the 30-year curse, great.

One Reason Why Indiana Will Win

The run defense is the real deal.

Other than a rough second half against Ohio State, LB Tegray Scales and company have managed to bog down just about everyone’s ground attack

The Hoosiers held Saquon Barkley to under three yards per carry – allowing just 39 yards of Penn State rushing – stuffed Virginia, and kept the Georgia Southern option attack to a not-that-bad 242 yards.

The linebackers are terrific and the line is doing its job. Considering John O’Korn and is coming off a three-interception game against Michigan State – when the passing game didn’t work a lick in the rain – stop the run, stop the Wolverine offense.

One Reason Why Michigan Will Win

The Michigan defense did its job.

The weather was awful, the Wolverines were good last week with no excuses. Michigan State struggled to get anything going on the ground other than one 50-yard dash, and ended up throwing for a mere 94 yards.

This is still the nation’s No. 1 defense, it’s still fantastic at getting into the backfield, and it’s great at generating pressure in key spots.

There isn’t enough of a Hoosier downfield passing game to worry about the field being stretched – the Wolverines will tee off against the IU ground attack and midrange passes.

Indiana will need to win the turnover margin to pull this off. Michigan will do its part with a few giveaways, but the Hoosiers have a big fumbling problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan will bounce back.

Indiana’s defense is rested, and it’ll make O’Korn to make something happen – and he will.

He’ll make up for the bad performance against MSU with a strong, steady game to go along with yet another be game from the defensive front.

Throw another year onto the winning streak.
