Miami has to fight through the layup to get to the home showdowns against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.

North Carolina is stuck in a rough season with injuries and youth contributing to a losing campaign, and now it’s about letting loose and screwing someone up. That didn’t work last week in a 59-7 loss to Virginia Tech, but now that UNC has hit the seven-loss mark, there’s nothing to lose.

Can Miami step up and have an easy layup? It rocked at Duke, but it went through a whole lot of drama against Florida State and Georgia Tech before having to battle through a tough win over Syracuse.

Now the College Football Playoff spotlight is on – and it’s going to be glaring next week when the Hokies come to town. This is the dog days game, and the Canes have to get through it fast and move on.

One Reason Why Miami Will Win

The Tar Heels aren’t moving the ball a lick.

Only three teams in college football are worse at converting on third downs – hitting just 28% of its tries – moving the chains on just 3-of-17 chances last week against Virginia Tech.

The offense couldn’t run the ball, but the passing attack was worse, with three quarterbacks combining to complete 8-of-22 passes. As long as Miami focuses and cares, it should be able to get into the backfield as much as it wants to and stall drive after drive.

One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win

Somewhat shockingly, Miami is struggling to move the chains, too.

UNC is last in the ACC in third down conversions, but Miami is second-worst on the board.

Malik Rosier is throwing well – he cranked up 344 yards and two scores against Syracuse – and Travis Homer has been fine for the ground game with Mark Walton out, but this isn’t a team that’ll go on long, sustained drives.

UNC doesn’t take the air out of the ball – it’s last in the ACC in time of possession – but this is the game to do it. If the Heels could ever figure out how to play stall-ball, this is the time.

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will go through the motions and come up with an easy win after sleeping through the first quarter.

At home, North Carolina will turn it loose as it makes a little noise with an early lead, and then the Cane D will shut everything down.

The Tar Heels will turn it over three times, Miami will get points out of all of them, and then it’s on to Virginia Tech.
