Both teams are effectively out of the ACC title chase, but they’re still making a whole lot of noise.
Louisville continues to be one of the ACC’s weirdest teams. Lamar Jackson is carrying an okay squad that struggled in losses to NC State and Boston College, but managed to beat a desperate Florida State team in Tallahassee.
Win in Winston-Salem, and the Cardinals are bowl eligible with a shot at a double-digit win season – and a better year than 2016.
Wake Forest has lost three straight games, and it’s not going to get a whole lot easier with a trip to Notre Dame up next, followed up by a date at Syracuse, and then closing out with NC State and Duke.
Lose to Louisville, and Demon Deacon bowl hopes are in big, big trouble.
This is just the fifth time the two programs have faced each other, with Louisville winning the first four starting with the 2007 Orange Bowl.
One Reason Why Louisville Will Win
He keeps producing week after week, and it doesn’t matter what amazing defense he’s facing.
While he might not be having the all-around year he came up with as the 2016 Heisman-winner, he’s not all that far off, hitting 60% of his passes for 2,478 yards and 17 touchdowns with just five picks.
Against a team full of NFL talents, Jackson ripped through FSU for 178 rushing yards and a score a week after tearing off 180 yards and three touchdowns.
How did he do last year against Wake Forest? He ran for 153 yards and and threw for a score in the blowout win. The Demon Deacons might be great at getting behind the line, but that didn’t bother him last year.
Yeah, but …
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
If you’re going to somehow beat Louisville and Jackson, the only chance is to get behind the line and hit Jackson before he can take off.
Of course, if you miss, then No. 8 is running wild through the second level and secondary. The Demon Deacon pressure didn’t matter much last week when Georgia Tech was taking off for 427 rushing yards and five scores, but the front seven is still good enough to be a problem.
Wake Forest continues to be fantastic at getting into the backfield, with Duke Ejiofor and company leading the nation with 63 tackles for loss.
The Demon Deacons don’t turn the ball over, and they’re aggressive. They’re not explosive, but they can hang in a game like this at home.
What’s Going To Happen
Lamar Jackson is going to happen.
The Demon Deacons are just good enough to lose this in a fight, with the defense to keep the score down and make it a fight. But in the end, Louisville will get the big play out of Jackson that it’ll need to pull this out in the fourth.
