Very, very, very quietly, Kentucky is in the SEC East title chase for the second year in a row.
The Wildcats lost in painful fashion to Florida, but the Gators are falling away, and the chances are there to make plenty of noise over the back half.
Is UK really that good? Not really, but it’s had two weeks to rest up and relax after beating Missouri, and with a win over South Carolina under its belt.
At the very least, win this week against Miss State, take down a mediocre Tennessee and Ole Miss at home, beat Vanderbilt on the road, and then, all of a sudden, your 2017 Kentucky Wildcats will be going into Georgia on November 18th with a shot at going to the SEC Championship.
UK won last year in a 40-38 firefight, but Mississippi State won the previous seven meetings.
The Bulldogs got past the blowout losses to Georgia and Auburn on the road with a layup over BYU. With UMass still on the schedule, win this week, and a bowl game is almost guaranteed.
One Reason Why Kentucky Will Win
Missouri was able to run effectively two weeks ago, and Florida was able to pound away a bit, but for the most part, the UK defensive front has been able to hold up.
It hasn’t faced a dangerous runner out of the backfield like Nick Fitzgerald, but so far this season the D has been able to hold up despite not generating a ton of pressure behind the line.
Most of all, Kentucky isn’t screwing up.
Seventh in the nation in turnover margin, the Wildcats have lost the ball five times all year. Control the clock, don’t give up cheap points, play tough defense. Do that, and the Cats should be able to get out alive.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
Okay, Nick Fitzgerald. Time to go off.
He’s been okay this season, but he’s been a wee bit too inconsistent with lousy games against Georgia and Auburn in the two losses. When he hits 60% of his throws, though, and runs well, there’s no problem.
The Bulldogs might have lost last season, but Fitzgerald completed 62% of his passes – almost all short range, though – and ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
On the year, MSU is 3-0 when Fitzgerald is throwing well – Kentucky is allowing quarterbacks to connect on just over 60% of their throws.
What’s Going To Happen
Kentucky is too offensively challenged.
The defense is playing well, and the offense cranked it up against a miserable Missouri defense, but scoring enough points on the road against a solid Mississippi State team for a full four quarters won’t be easy.
The Bulldog offensive line will come up with a good game, the defense will stall the Wildcats way too often,
This will be when Fitzgerald gets the passing game going a bit.
