It’s not giving Michigan State enough credit to say that Penn State beat Iowa twice, but that’s sure how it looked at times last week in a 17-10 Hawkeye loss to the Spartans in East Lansing.

And now, after coming one play away from taking down the Nittany Lions, Iowa is 0-2 in Big Ten play with road games against Wisconsin and Nebraska, along with the home date against Ohio State, to deal with.

Fortunately, home games against Illinois are there to help get over the blues.

The Illini have been awful over the last few weeks, getting run over by USF, and then doing the impossible by making Nebraska look great in a 28-6 loss.

The team needs a positive identity under Lovie Smith, and it needs a good road win to start making the program look like it’s head in the right direction.

One Reason Why Illinois Will Win

Lost in all the craziness of an overtime win over Iowa State and a close loss to Penn State is how the Iowa offense isn’t exactly humming.

Akrum Wadley is a fantastic back, but Nevada transfer James Butler hasn’t been healthy and the passing game hasn’t shown up for long, long stretches.

19 yards. That’s what the Hawkeyes netted on the ground against MSU after coming up with just 82 against Penn State.

Forget what happened against USF – Illinois has the upside on the defensive front to keep the middling attack from going off. However, the cure for a struggling O is to do a nice job on …

One Reason Why Iowa Will Win

Third downs.

Illinois is miserable at getting its defense off the field. USF converted 12-of 18 third down chances, and Nebraska converted 7-of-11 chances.

On the flip side, the Iowa defense is a rock on third downs, allowing offenses to convert just 29% of the time. Against a painfully inefficient Illinois passing game, the Hawkeyes should be able to overcome a slew of offensive issues with a solid performance from the D.

Be stunned if Illinois cranks up 250 yards of total offense.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa won’t look pretty, but Nathan Stanley won’t make any big mistakes.

He’s only thrown one interception on the year, and he’s not going to start now against an Illinois team that won’t do enough offensively to force the Hawkeyes to take a slew of big chances.

Iowa will come up with a few first quarter scores, and that should be enough.
