At some point, Indiana has to actually win one of these things.

Yeah, the Hoosiers are 3-4, but those four losses came against Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State – no shame there in any of those four.

They beat a solid Virginia Team on the road, but that’s been about it. Even with Wisconsin up next, there are plenty of chances to get three more wins and go bowling, but beating Maryland might be a must to get there.

For the Terps, it’s win or else.

It’s been a good season considering the big injuries and inconsistencies, but lose at home to the Hoosiers, and that’s it. If they’re at 3-5 with Michigan, at Michigan State and Penn State left to play, it’s on to 2018.

One Reason Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps have a few good playmakers who can crank up the offense now that they’re not facing the Wisconsin defense.

There’s a running game when Maryland commits to it, and it showed against he Badgers with Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison combining for over five yards per carry. But the team got down, started throwing, and that was it.

D.J. Moore was held in check, but he’s been among the Big Ten’s best receivers and has the potential to break the game open and force IU to press.

The Hoosiers are last in the Big Ten in turnover margin and takeaways – Maryland needs the IU mistakes to come, because …

One Reason Why Indiana Will Win

Maryland isn’t above having turnover problems, too.

The Hoosiers might be at the bottom of the Big Ten when it comes to turnovers, but Maryland is right there – it’s second-to-last in turnover margin.

The takeaways might not be there – the secondary isn’t doing much of anything to take the ball away – but the defense as a whole has been solid. It’s okay against the run, and terrific at getting behind the line.

The Maryland offense has been a bit flaky with no downfield passing game when Moore isn’t making big things happen. Indiana has been fabulous on third downs and should be able to get off the field just enough to stall Terp drives time and again.

Score early, turn the game over to the defense, and win the turnover margin. Indiana can do that.

What’s Going To Happen

Does Maryland have the ability to hold serve at home and keep its season alive? It does, but Indiana is good enough to pull off a key road win thanks to a defense that’ll take over the game for long stretches.

Maryland has more firepower and more upside, but the Hoosiers will get better quarterback play out of Peyton Ramsey than Maryland will get out of Max Bortenschlager, and they’ll take home a huge 50/50 win that’ll show just how strong they really are.

Even if they’re in the middle of the Big Ten pack.
